Patcher down

New Hardware. Fresh W7. Fresh Drivers. So ... fresh CF installation.

But, i get the old launcher (I get yesterday the installer on the website ... damn) and when the patcher (selfupdate) run, it stop at 15% and close all. Just like months ago.
I'm unhappy to can't get the very last version of CF if i download it. I'm unhappy to, one more time, try esoteric methods to force the updater to do its job (btw thanks to the forum). I'm unhappy to can't play a Sunday for that.

  • I'm still unhappy to waste my time because it seem "too expensive" to let the time to the coders to secure theyr code, and change this horrible installer for a good one.

Well, one more time the mod Vu saved my week end : forum.z8games.com/showthread.php?306742-Failed-to-download-patch-file-Information

To add one more entry in the search engine i will let the exact procedure i followed :

1 - Uninstall CF (by the control panel) then delete the old CF folder
2 - Delete the "Crossfire" folder in the "Mydocs" folder (after have saved the replays in another folder, if any)
3 - Download the last (nasty) installer available here : http://crossfire.z8games.com/download.html
4 - Download and Install in new CF folder with a different name (if the old one was named "CF", i use "CFNA" instead, for the example)
5 - Launch the launcher and get the self update bug one time. At this stage you don't have the "xtrap" and "hgwc" folder if you're in my exact case.
6 - Move the "Rez" folder in the root of the partition or rename it (ex : "Rez.backup") then delete the folders "log" and "backup"
7 - Launch the launcher to force the update. It can take a fews times for nothing, i needed to launch it 4 times to finally have the update process running. The updater will dowload all the new files and install it.
8 - When the update is finished, Xtrap will become nuts and it will say to you that a rez file is missing. The first one in this exact case is the RF003.REZ. CF will close.
9 - Return to the "Rez" folder you saved previously (in step 6), enter in, do a "CTRL+A" with the keyboard to select all files then copy them in the new fresh "Rez" folder installed by the updater.
10 - DON'T OVERWRITE existing files, choose "ignore".
11 - when it's done, say "i love you" to Vu, llaunch CF and enjoy.
  • And again ... but this time the procedure don't give results. Xtrap missing i guess ... damn

It looks like something might be blocking the connection.

    1. Have you tried to add the CrossFire folder to your anti-virus and firewall exception list? Add them!
    2. Have you made sure that there is no programs running in the background which may conflict with the patcher? Close any programs which is not needed.
    3. Try deleting the X-Trap files and then re-start CrossFire. This will make X-Trap re-download the files.
  • I directly uninstalled all security software from the computer, to avoid this possibility. Killed all possible process too. It's not a cheap laptop but much more an engineer's tower that i need to upgrade regulary.
This is a fresh new/clean install from scratch (registry, temp files, memory and prefetch cleaned from all possible occurence of Z8 and crossfire). Xtrap is missing; no files or folder or anything.

I will continue to digg the thing, but i'm worried to be so regulary annoyed since years by this updater. Specially for the price i've invested in the game.

The reason why X-Trap is missing is because you haven't completed patching it yet.

Anyway, let me know how it goes!

And Xtrap is always the blocking factor when i need a fresh install.

Well, after investigation i've finded the new problem : the game detection service (GameScannerService) of my Razer Tartarus keypad. This tool load the keypad profile in detecting the game loaded in memory.
Why now and not before, why only with this game ... i don't known and i really don't care. But it's fixed now.

So, if the procedure in the message #2 don't fix your problem with the new version, check your keypad/mouse drivers and unload theyr services.

I'm glad that the issue is fixed. Send in a support ticket regarding the keypad/mouse drivers. Hopefully, they can add these drivers to CrossFire/X-Trap exception list.
  • And again ^^, it's ritual now.
No longer the keypad or the mouse drivers. Let's dance.
I update the thread when i've found the bad guy lol

This time i've set a DMZ on the "crossfire's computer", the time to update the game.
Front server (iptables/squid) set on the rule "are you totally crazy ?".

(In bonus of the procedure described in the post#2 of this thread.)

ps : don't forget to secure again your network one time that the update is done
