Insert button

In CF, if you press INSERT, you can see the names of your teammates who are spread throughout the map. There is also a number on top of each teammate that's constantly changing. What does the number mean? I thought that the player is farther from you if the number goes higher, and vice versa.

Also, does anyone else find it annoying when people use this INSERT feature to locate VIP players to trade?
