Step 4 disconnect

i am able to launch my game correctly and log into crossfire but when i go to join a server it goes to step 4 and stays there and like it sits there for a minute or so and eventually says disconnected from server. i just really want to play crossfire with my brother... he is getting the same error to... i am on windows 8.
