Black screen of death

First I get frozen, then it plays all the sounds that I missed during that time. Then it goes into black screen mode but all keys are working including shooting and esc button. Irritates me when I have to tab out and back to find out that I just died.

Any solutions?

Windows XP SP3 Home Edition 2002
2GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9250 128MB graphics card

Epic old processor, and yes I believe it sucks and is outdated.

Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz

Try to update your Graphic and Directx Drivers.
