Lag Spikes - Going Crazy!

Okay this problem has driven me mad and I'm hopeless. For about a month now I've been dealing with these annoying lag spikes that happen 2-3 times every match for a long time(usually last a round). They are usually in a similar pattern, it'll spike to around 500+ then on to 800, 900, 1200 and numbers around there. After that it'll drop closer to the 300s and near 180 then down to my normal ping of 68.

Now here's where it gets weird. I called my ISP (Shaw) several times and they checked everything, or as they say so. They installed a new outlet, ran many speed tests and the results are always good. Im now asking them to change my modem and they say that itll cost me since they see no problem.

Since my ISP couldn't figure it out, I though it'd be my laptop, which is Windows 7 64bit. I tried several online fixes such as disabling network throttling, changing my audio drivers, etc. However, now I'm almost convinced it cannot be my laptop because I went on a roadtrip to Calgary and I was on my relative's wireless, AND THERE WERE NO PING SPIKES!

I come home today, and the ping spikes have returned. I am connected straight to the modem and the ping spikes are still there. I also connect via wire to a router and then the modem, and there are still ping spikes there also. I connect to my home's wireless and there are still ping spikes there.

This is a large problem because I am a competitive gamer, and now I am clueless. Is there anything I should try that may help me?
*Also, on a side note, I noticed every time i tried an online fix, the ping spikes would lessen and then come back exactly the same after a while. Maybe its just me, but I thought it may be helpful to let you know.

Thanks in advance!

When my ping spikes i just reset my router, you probably tried that but i just wanted to give it a shot.

No that will not help, right now I am connected straight to the modem.

    Thanks anyways.
  • If it is a wireless Internet connection and others are using it, try p2pover. It will limit others Internet and you will have a faster Internet speed, sometimes you will get a spike.
  • 1. Try Gamebooster
    2. download tcp viewer from sysinternals and check what all applications are accessing internet

I face this issue even after trying the above options. My inference is that Smilegate might be adding a lot of quick fixes to keep the hackers away. And those fixes overthe years might have introduced cumulative system overhead. This game is probably at the end of its useful life. Have you ever checked how much RAM this game takes? For me its up to 750 Mb of RAM. And still it f******s because it can not handle multiple CPUs. I have 8 cores and I now a days end up un checking 7 of them to remove f******. Just making this game run it self is a pain in the a** now. Install another s/w and the only way it works for me is if I re-install msxml4.0 and restart.

And it gets funnier. I have rollback Rx installed. Using this I can reset my system to the last working configuration. And sometimes this game fails to load even after a full rollback. Makes me think its the server/capacity
  • Honestly, Gamebooster is a great program to use. However, it gets really buggy after a month or so. it SHOULD bring down the pings for a while but it wont last long.

Try this. use gamebooster for a while and if it gets buggy, then UNINSTALL gamebooster and just run cf without it. your ping will be as good as when you had gamebooster but less laggy and maintains the "good ping".

i had the same problem like you too... but i found out that it wasnt the problem with the computer but the internet. i tried that exact SAME thing that you tried... but the best way is to change the modem or change the internet company.
