wired internet screwed me
so i was using wireless, and cf worked fine.
i plugged in my ethernet cord, so that i was now using wifi and wired internet concurrently, so that network/sharing center shows it like this:

and then every time i try to start cf it gave "failed to download version.ini"
even when i unplug the ethernet cable and use one connection at a time, i get this error. i just cant get rid of it. i tried resetting ip through cmd, but that didnt help.
additional info: the wired and wireless network have the same SSID/network name, which is odd and annoying. apparently the two networks get automaticaly bridged, yet when i try to manage the adapters, it shows them as separate networks, and displays as if they are unbridged.
anyway to just restore my computer to the condition it was in before i connected the ethernet cable?
thx guys

Just disable your local area network adapter, so you're only using the wireless.

Yeah i disabled the lan adapter as well as unplugged the cable but it still gives me the error for some reason. Its like the ethernet permafcked me  -
I really really don't think it is your type of physical layer connection to your router that is causing this issue. How could it? It is likely a conflict with another program.
When I just used wireless, not together with wired, cf worked fine. As soon as I connected the cable, poof. failed to download version.ini. when i switch off both wired and wireless now and use my crappy phone internet, cf loads fine.
i looked up threads about version.ini, a lot of ppl say its an internet connection issue. -
Do you have any links to those threads handy? I'd like to understand the problem a bit better since this seems to be a common issue.
yeah. if u search version.ini, im pretty sure theres a couple threads (most have very few if any replies) where someone said to restart their internet connection. i just found , others are buried cus of the threads i made about this

I've looked through the first page or so of the forum search results for version.ini and the only two that said anything other than replace the file were these two threads. Did you find something beyond these?

However, neither of them offered a reason why nor did anyone confirm if this worked for them. What are your ping/tracert to the servers and speed test? -
I apparently didn't read your original post very closely. What does this mean? How does anything wired have an SSID? Do you really have two networks? If so, is this a residential setup? Do you have two routers?additional info: the wired and wireless network have the same SSID/network name, which is odd and annoying. apparently the two networks get automaticaly bridged, yet when i try to manage the adapters, it shows them as separate networks, and displays as if they are unbridged. -

i mean the wired network doesnt have a typical "Network 2" or "Network 7" kind of name; instead of being listed as two networks, both wired and wireless connections show up next to the same name in the network/sharing center. that name is the wireless network's SSID.
yes, they are two separate networks. wireless is 54 mbps, wired is 100 mbps.
im living in a dorm room with an ethernet jack on the wall. it just connected automatically when i plugged in the cable.
im not using any routers. -
Oh fun. You have no control over anything. Have you verified the ports are open?
the three greycloak recommended for cf are closed, in fact... i would open them through windows firewall, but apparently windows firewall has ceded firewall operation completely to my antivirus, norton internet security. trying to open ports through that interface is just a pain in the ass
-
actually, i checked again and those ports arent blocked :P
the problem, i think, is that my computer is auto-bridging the wireless and wired networks:Some computers that have been brought to campus are configured with both LAN and wireless connections and programmed to bridge traffic between the two. Any time such a machine becomes active with both LAN and wireless connections, it creates a loop causing spanning tree to possibly shut down parts of the network in that segment. At best, this will result in poor performance in part of the network, and at worst, total loss of connectivity in part of the network. Another aspect of this is real poor performance for the user's computer. Please make sure you are not configured to act as a Network Bridge.
if someone knows how i can undo this evil autobridging that has occurred, pls help

so first o disconnected from the wifi (turned autoconnect off).
Then i disabled the lan adapter but with the ethernet cable plugged in.
Then i connected to a new wireless network.
Started cf, it loaded fine. When hwg was on step 7 i enabled the lan adapter. (Or u could wait to go in game, then alt tab and enable the lan adapter).
Now i have 34 ping in alpha. Might still have issues; havent tested extensively yet...but at least the version.ini error went away.
if anyone needs me to elaborate on any of this, just let me know
edit: this was workin fine last night but now its all glitchy... i massively lag when im in games, can barely join, just get stuck on loading screens.
