Crossfire Players from Melbourne

Hey fellow Melbournians,

I'm wondering what internet provider you are with, because I'm currently with tpg unlimited and I consistently get 270 ping (a year ago I had 200). I really need to know which provider I need to switch to in order to get a ping of 200 or under. I'm willing to spend up to $60 for at least 200gb a month, OR, $80-90 for phone and adsl2+. I know it's a big ask, but I hope I get some answers :)

  • You just want a good plan? Just ask your friends who has internet. I have no clue what companies are in your country.
  • I've asked a few of them, but none of my friends actually play CF so it's not really reliable to follow what they say.

Internet providers that I know of: Internode, iinet, Telstra, Bigpond.

What is your ping with Bigpond?
  • You don't have to ask them if they play CF. You can ask them to test how fast their internet to the CF servers. Z8Games and their servers are located in Toronto, where I live.
Just go to the following sites to see what's your ping, Mbps.
    http://pingtest.net/ - To measure Ping.
http://speedtest.net/ - To measure download, and upload speed.
Make sure to test it on Toronto, you can drag the map.
  • I play on the US west server, does that alter anything?
  • Oh yes, it will, the closer the servers are to you, the better the ping you will have. If you play in UK server, I think your ping will be 10-20 ping reduced. Since it's theoretically closer to you.

I mean will the location on the pingtest map still be toronto?

    150 ping
  • If you want to play in the UK servers, try changing the location from Toronto to a UK one. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Foxtrot, Clan Servers are all located in Toronto, Canada. I'm not sure about the US and the UK ones.
  • Do 2 tests on speedtest.net, one on San Francisco like you said, and one on London, England to see which is better, UK or US.
  • i know a friend who live in Egypt he had about 240 ping so i told him to download game booster and close all other apps when he play CF, now he is getting about 120-140 ping, try that before spending some money, it might help :)

Dude, you really need to look at a map! UK is waaaay further away than any of the US servers from Australia. And as you're not in Melbourne, I have no idea why your're commenting, esp as you don't appear to know anything relevant.

To answer the question in an informed way:

I'm in Melbourne, I also happen to build Telco networks.. so have a good picture of whats what.

If you can get the Telstra Bigpond Elite Cable, I would (but make sure they don't give you the older Cisco router you want the new Netgear that they can now provide).. I live in the city and use the cable and CF ping is now 167-170 when stable.

If you can't get Elite cable, then you're going to want ADSL2.. I'd still recommend Telstra. The Optus cable is also good, but you won't get such good speeds.

The Elite Cable service theoretically gives you 105 mbps, they sell it as a 100 mbps service. Even the cheaper 30 mbps cable service is very good.

Elite offers 200 GB data per month/similar available on the 30 mbps connection. Optus have similar GB allowances. (and no, I don't work for Telstra)

I did a Speedtest to Internode today as it happens, after some local LAN tuning.. i got a 5ms ping and a downstream 116 mbps/upstream 2.3 mbps.

For a good comparison and excellent forum, go to Whirlpool, the aussie broadband forum. Pretty much all the info u need is there.

Also bear in mind, your own equipment, router/wireless access point etc can have a significant impact on your service.. and how you patch everything together can as well. Make sure you run the game on a wire, not wireless for best results.. and (if you're not the only one using the service) not through a wireless router's switch ports either for even better results.

Thanks mate, I'll take a look at telstra.
