You can talk and type. FACEBOOK! MSN, Those two can be used in group chats.

I suggest Teamspeak, I like the way you can mute people and just type instead. If you type, it'll make a beep sound. But you will have to pay for a server, software is free.

You can get Teamspeak 3 for free, only up to 32 members, if you want to go beyond that number, you will have to pay for it.

X Fire could work, however it is a bit of a resource hog.

Reminds me of the Steam client in terms of its unreliability, inefficiency, and ugliness...Thanks Valve
