Headphones

Okay, I know there's another thread titled "Gaming Headphones", but I'm posting a thread that has the wants that are specific for me.

First off, I'm currently using Skull Candy Aviators. How do these perform compared to the ones I've listed below, and how many channels are they..? I really don't know how to check. :o

Secondly, I know there are 2 channel headphones to 8 channel. Is there any higher than 8 channel, and what are the differences?

Now, the specifics I have:

-I have a $120 limit.
-I want headphones that are great for GM and Pin Pointing, and all that jazz. :)

I've seen these:
-http://shop.steelseries.com/us/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2-full-size-headset.htmlj

Please tell me which is better our of those two, and if you have better than that for my price range, please feel free to share. :)

skull candy's website does not say much about their product. i can't tell what it uses.

as for the channels, 2 channels is 2 speakers. (stereo sound, 1 in each ear, left and right) which is the easiest - but not necessarily the most effective - way to pinpoint. (the latest patch however, made 2.0 seemingly impossible to pinpoint and is not clear if they will change it back) but before the patch, there was a very tiny middle spot where you heard breath in both ears. and if your cross-hair was to the left of the ghost, you would not hear breath in the right ear at all. but you would hear some in 8ch

8 channels i do believe may be another term for 7.1. (surround sound - back, front, middle) my guess is they have 3 small speakers in each ear + the sub/s?. the advantage to having more speakers would be that your brain can automatically tell where a ghost is soon as you hear the breath and not have to move your cross-hair left and right to find the exact spot. this is especially advantageous for quick bunny hoppers. depending on which small speaker in your ear made the most sound, you will fire in the direction of where you heard the ghost by reaction.

the difference in the sound of each individual mini speaker in the ear cup is small and it will take a few weeks of regular play for your ears/brain to do able to get it down pat. At first, you probably won't even come close to hitting the ghost. pinpointing ghosts somewhere in front of you is more difficult than 2.0. you will hear breath in both ears from a wider range. but again, the more you practice, the more your brain will become better trained to distinguish left and right.

It has been said crossfire does not support surround sound (the 2 extra speakers in your ear) in which case, the above may be wrong and the new explanation would be in 4+ch, your headset will distribute an [X] amount of breath sound from each ear depending on where the ghost is coming from. (there will almost always be breath from both ears, but one ear will be louder) so your brain judges where the breath is without actually pinpointing. you will automatically know where the ghost is as soon as you hear him with enough practice. the catch is if you don't play everyday, you will lose skill. but with 2.0 you will always be able to pinpoint easily.

and as far as the range of breath goes, both of the headsets i own hear breath farther using 8ch over 2ch. although i'm not sure if that is always the case for other brands.

to my knowledge there is no 9.1/10 channel headsets. but i didn't look very hard either.

So i guess it's all preference. also, i'm not an audio expert. i have no schooling or anything. i just play/test ghost mode a lot and develop theories.

i can't really help you with which headset to buy. i've only owned 2 high-end ones.

8 speakers is 6.1 surround sound

front left - left - rear left - 1 bass speaker
front right - right - rear right - 1 bass speaker

stereo sources will either play on all speakers evenly or only on the left and right speakers depending on driver setup. the drivers can also "digitalize" the stereo source to create a more directional soundstage

oh ok. makes sense. so is 7.1 is 10 speakers that have a top on each side added?

I want to thank both of you for your input, I really appreciate it, and I learned something new. :) Based on what I've read, I think my current headphones are 2 channel, due to the fact that it plays through both ears only win they're in front of me or behind me, and plays through one ear when they are to the side. I'm still open to more suggestion.

Doop, (*Edit: Derp, I looked at the page again. 97 new and in stock.) would it be possible to find those new somewhere? I'd prefer them like that, but I feel they may be out of my price range. Second of all, why do you recommend that one most, and why?

on headphones 7.1 would be 10 speakers with a center that plays evenly in each ear.

oh good think i checked that link. if you choose to go with the Siberia v2, you absolutely have to get the ones that come with the usb sound card. that's this one.

    http://shop.steelseries.com/us/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2-full-size-usb-headset.html

it costs 20$ more but the sound is FAR better. comes with equalizers, and another ghost mode enhancing options. Don't buy the 89.99$

Thanks. These are definitely in consideration. :)
  • I'm going to put this back up, I would like some more reviews from other experienced Ghost Mode players. :o
