lol @ people judging languages solely on *their* notions of global economies. I believe the OP asked not just about "beneficial" languages but also "enjoyable" ones.

So take your economic "expertise" elsewhere; whether your predictions are right or wrong is largely irrelevant :)

It's not like you'd go broke if you remained monolingual (though I hope this will not be the case). So just pick one that looks interesting to you.
Surely its more interesting to learn a language spoken by one sixth of the world than some minor language.
I can of course only speak for myself, but I learn languages because its fun being able to communicate with as many people as possible.

And the financial perspective is relevant. The fact that you can't see it, is not.

Your and others' "financial perspective" may not be as accurate as you and they might think. That is all I am saying. I don't think that learning French is noticeably less enjoyable than learning Mandarin, for example. And if it is, it would not be because of economic reasons. If we were going for maximum population, everyone would only learn Mandarin, English, and Spanish lol

Here's a perspective: knowing English alone means being better off than most of the world. Need no one fret or obsess over what language will carry them one rung higher in the rat race

    it being enjoyable is perception

    financial is a fact.....

    just stop

    you're getting nowhere..
  • Our perspective is "China economy will do even better" or "China economy will do worse".
    Not rocket science.

If you want a fun language to learn, go for Latin or something.
From the ones listed, I'd learn Italian and Sign.
For real use from the list, learn Japanese or German.
Going beyond the list and still useful; Chinese (Yue/Kanto).
  • It depends what you plan to do. Power will shift in the next few decades [possibly years if America continues in an "If you don't listen to us, we'll shoot you and declare war on you" attitude].

The Asias are becoming more independent, so learn a language that will make you more useful in the future [depending on who you think will take over].

The Chinese economy may tank over, but China isn't the only Asian country.

Besides that fact, I recommend learning as many languages as possible [I myself know English, French, Vietnamese, and a little bit of Chinese]. It will help you in the future no matter what you choose. Languages rarely die. Nations may die, but languages may live on. Who knows? In 70 years, English could be rendered useless.

Why sont you "just stop" assuming that you know the "facts", Mr. Financial Expert? Enjoyableness is perception and so is your notion of what the facts are.

Edit: dot, why the hell would you learn Yue/Canto? That's not useful at all, not even as useful as Latin lol
  • I'd say learn Chinese.
If you know English, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic I reckon you can pretty much communicate with everyone.
I'm not too sure how useful sign language will be because personally I've never been in a situation where I've needed it.

    For Hong Kong.
    But mandarin too eventually, obviously.

Latin is spoken by a lot less people, why the irrelevant and faulty comparison?
You seem very eager to be right and confrontational.
If you have issues with your self image, please take it up with someone else, I'm busy.

    Unfortunately Russian isn't available.
The thought of learning Chinese and/or Japanese always fascinated me.
I figure French would be easier for me since I already know Spanish and the two can somewhat relate, but with Japanese I could practice with anime.

they are no where near similar, i been studying french for 7 years now (gr. 4 to 11) and i did one semester of spanish in gr. 10. I found spanish to be a lot easier to pick up, and french is completely different; but i don't know how french fares to your other options.

Im not trying to appear right at all. Im merelynsaying that people need not speak so surely. And please, Canto is useless even in HK/GD. Anyone you would communicate with there would speak Eng, Mandarin, or both. It's less useful than Latin because knowing Latin roots at least gives you wordsense so that you could, for example, understand signs all across Europe (well a large swathe of Europe anyway).

All I said is that you have no warrant to speak with such certainty on all issues. Did I attack you personally? No, but you seem to have taken offense nonetheless. Oh well. Do I doubt that you're probably smarter than the average person? No. But are you as smart as you think?

Of course, that doesn't matter. What I want to say to the OP is:

Disregard (pseudo)intellectual jibberjabber on a video game forum and choose a language or luckily more than one that you feel like learning. Ultimately, success depends on much more than just knowing a language.

I don't know about french to Spanish, but I took a few french classes in HS and I found that knowing Spanish made it easier.
