What language should I study?
I want to learn a new language so I'm going to take a class on one, but I'm not sure which one would be more beneficial or enjoyable.
Me:

-Living in SoCal
-Know Spanish and English
The choices are Japanese, French, German, Italian, and Sign Language.
What would you guys recommend?

Russian. And Japanese/Chinese. When you learn that languages - you discover a new Universe. Trust me. -

Unfortunately Russian isn't available.
The thought of learning Chinese and/or Japanese always fascinated me.
I figure French would be easier for me since I already know Spanish and the two can somewhat relate, but with Japanese I could practice with anime. -

German is not difficult at all; it's highly logical and mostly straightforward to learn. It's also great if you're emo and like depressing literature lol -

Wrong
Why would anyone invest into learning that language when everyone knows that the chinese economy will tank in the near future -

If you want to learn a useful language, study French, German, or Chinese.
If you want to study a badass language, then Russian's your option.DDOS_Exploit wrote: »if u know some spanish then learn how to speak Philippines..
Tagalog is pretty basic. I knew a few Fili people in college, I understood partially what they were saying after just a few weeks. -
The financial strength of China is pretty indisputable from its sheer size.RawrJafrikan wrote: »Wrong

The stability is very much questionable, but a huge region like China will never be rendered irrelevant in business.
Certainly worth investing a few weeks to learn the language. -

Well, I thought that Japanese was also a good option (from OP's list) after German. But if we're measuring the merit of languages based on their respective countries' economic prospects, I guess we should forget about that since Japan's economy has been derping for decades and will probably continue to in the near future  -
Well it depends, are you learning a new language as a hobby? Or do you actually plan to utilize it in some fashion? I.E make your resume look more appealing, or to say funny things in a language your friends won't understand? The easiest to learn will be French if you just want to learn the easiest one.I'm leaning more towards Japanese or German.
How hard would it be to learn the Japanese alphabet/symbols?
Easy. I attempted to learn written Japanese as a hobby. The alphabet is easy. Characters on the other hand. Ridiculously hard. Made me quit when I reached the point of learning Kanji. I don't even want to open the chapter to how many characters you have to learn. -

who is china going to sell to when everyone else tanks...???
edit: i agree with tasty.. learning any Asian language is stupid especially when most of them already know english -
lol @ people judging languages solely on *their* notions of global economies. I believe the OP asked not just about "beneficial" languages but also "enjoyable" ones.
So take your economic "expertise" elsewhere; whether your predictions are right or wrong is largely irrelevant
It's not like you'd go broke if you remained monolingual (though I hope this will not be the case). So just pick one that looks interesting to you.
