Why do most people in the US drive automatics?
Most people in Europe drive manual cars. It's a much better driving experience, saves fuel, repair costs are much cheaper and you have better control of the vehicle. It's a complete no-brainer... well it is if you can actually drive a manual (or stick-shift is what I think Americans call it). -

Repair costs sounds a bit iffy.
You're not going to break an automatic the same way you could easily bust a manual.
Its also kind of the opposite of better control.
You focus too much on clutching and shifting, much less on actual vehicle control.
Automatic is press gas pedal until desired speed is reached. Don't have to do anything but steer.
I'm more confused about this apparent penile extension that is having a big engine.

People might not care about the environment but it can save money on fuel.
When automatic transmissions go wrong, it can be extremely costly to fix or replace.
As long as you know to properly drive a manual, you won't ruin the clutch. The biggest problem with manual cars is that the clutch can go if the vehicle isn't driven well.
I find that I'm more focused when driving a manual since I have to worry about changing gears at the right time, but that's just opinionated.
I'm confused about that too... I drive a 1.6 litre VW Golf, 0-60mph in 10 dazzling seconds.

The hell you say.... My aunt has a Ford Focus that runs 638 miles in a tank. Only takes her $60 to completely fill it up, won't break, but if it does; her husband has about half a million stashed. Not even sure what's in his bank account.... -

Fuel is twice as expensive in the UK than it is in the US. The manual counterpart of that automatic car would theoretically do more miles. A poor student like me doesn't have half a million stashed in their bank account.

I drove myvdads standard for the first time saturday, i hit the streets after 2a hours in the parking lot. Getting out of first gear is a pain, constantly focusing on clutch is tiresome. I want my driving experience to be relaxed. Its a 3.0 liter v6 to boot

stick is better for racing, not casual driving, unless you travel high miles back and forth to work, or are on a budget, than you can get a stick..easier to maintain + better gas mileage. you also have to consider resell value on a stick, a lot of people don't really buy sticks especially in america, so it might take a while to resell it, of course it will be cheaper. Like poop said, many people want to relax when they drive, especially in america, driving can get pretty stressful, Europe has probably really never experienced traffic on a daily basis, nor people that don't know how to drive or drive with many distractions.

Europe has probably really never experienced traffic on a daily basis, nor people that don't know how to drive or drive with many distractions.

you haven't seen stressful until you've driven the autobahn, you haven't seen nice roads until you've been to portugal.
is there some major difference between american and european traffic i've missed? -

i drive stick because i find it fun
If you can drive in the City of London (the centralised business district), then you can drive any where in the world quite frankly. It might only be one square mile of space, but the roads are extremely narrow and congestion is ridiculously high. -

a lot of people use mass transit in Europe versus the united states. not to mention it is expensive to drive in europe...
