    There is a program on your computer that is causing the game to deny the Version.ini file to be written to.
    Do you have Iobit, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, S4Legends, or play Runescape or any other pc games? Please list them all.

    1. Open version.ini from you CF folder
    2. It should be empty. Copy the following and paste it on that version.ini notepad.

    [VERSION]
    LatestVersion = 1090
    MinimalVersion= 1077
    OwnVersion = 5

    [DOWNLOAD]
    server1 = http://cfpatch.z8games.com/download/

    [SERVER]
    COUNT = 1
    IP1 =74.200.6.133
    PORT1 =13008

    [HGW]
    PORT=16666
    SERVER1=74.200.6.161
    SERVER2=74.200.6.163
    POD1=50
    POD2=50

    3. Now close the notepad. DONT OPEN CF YET!
    4. Right click on the version.ini and click on properties.
    5. Tick the 'Read Only' box and click on 'Apply' then 'OK'
    6. Now open CF and everything should go fine!

    CF comes updated, devs pre-update each mirror now with latest update. This isn't the solution anymore.
    There is a program that is on your computer causing the game not to allow the Version.ini file to be written to because XTrap detects a file that it thinks is malware. If you have any mods for any game delete those off of your computer and recycle bin.
  • strg+ alt+ ent--> task manager --> processes --> search engine.exe --> rightclick ---> end process
  • Failed to download version.ini

    Guys follow this crossfire-z8 link and follow it's instructions - http://forum.z8games.com/showthread.php?t=210253

    worked for me even after the failed attempt to delete cookies, delete xtrap folder and version.ini

    This manually patch will allow you to go back to nightfall patch time and allows patcher to execute and updates the xtrap and in a few seconds u are in.

    Thank you man for your replay.

    And thank to c0lder for Manual Patch Files , this is the solving ==> http://forum.z8games.com/showthread.php?t=210253

    This works for me ! No more "Error failed to download version.ini " :)

    PS 1 :
    - after I tried the soltion that was written by " hfrfhdgh " , but i got the other error "'Please install the latest version of the game.'" .... so don't try this.

    - i don't use other programs , Cross Fire is the only game in my PC ... because someone asked {There is a program on your computer that is causing the game to deny the Version.ini file to be written to.
    Do you have Iobit, World of Warcraft, Minecraft, S4Legends, or play Runescape or any other pc games? Please list them all.}

    PS 2 : i am sorry for my bad english
  • Alot of people used game booster defrag and it worked for them.
  • Open up your Version.ini file from your Crossfire folder. Open it up as notepad.

    Then copy and paste this:
    [VERSION]
    LatestVersion = 1092
    MinimalVersion= 1077
    OwnVersion = 5

    [DOWNLOAD]
    server1 = http://cfpatch.z8games.com/download/

    [SERVER]
    COUNT = 1
    IP1 =74.200.6.133
    PORT1 =13008

    [HGW]
    PORT=16666
    SERVER1=74.200.6.161
    SERVER2=74.200.6.163
    POD1=50
    POD2=50

    1. Then save it in your Crossfire folder. If it won't allow you to save it in your Crossfire folder then save it somewhere else (Desktop) and then copy and replace it to your Crossfire folder.
    2. Right click on the file called Version.ini then tick the read-only option and click apply.
    3. Make sure you delete everything in the x-trap folder.
    4. Now Start Crossfire and it should work.

    This works 100% and it does not bring the "Download the latest version of Crossfire" error.
  • I did this method it opened the patcher but then i got:
    #
    'failed to downloading patch-list file'

    maybe cf is down?

    You opened up the wrong file. You need to open the file called version.ini and NOT version.dat.
