Failed to download version.ini

Hello, it's been two days now and I keep on getting this error when opening the game called 'Failed to download version.ini'
I have tried re-installing CF for about 20 times now even the CLEAN installation but none of them ever works! I am supposed to get some points today as it is a double clan points weekend but I guess it isn't going to work.
I have also downloaded the new Crossfire which is v1090 from the official page but that did not work either!

Tried searching through forums about this problem, used Ccleaner, restarted computer thousand times, asked about 20 friends for help but NONE of them worked. Nothing worked! This is making me mad because I have been trying to solve this error for 2 days! Could anyone help me out here?
Thank you very much in advance and if you are able to fix this problem god bless you!

  • Yo I had this same problem, I will definately help you out with this one bro, but I got a line going here. Just wait a little bit alright? Thanks. :)
  • Alright now, what I need you to do is answer all and any questions of what I am posting below, all information is needed to solve this properly, if any information seems sensitive to you then you are free to PM me the information.

    Do you play World of Warcraft, Minecraft, any other pc games? Please list.
    What anti-virus programs do you have on your computer?
    Do you have Iobit(anything Iobit)?
    Do you have any Mods for any games, Especially WoW or Minecraft? (Very Very Important)
    Go to the Properties of Version.ini File, both of the files, and make sure both have [Read Only] unchecked.

    Please restart your computer and start-up in [Safe Mode With Networking] then run CF and tell me exactly, step for step, what happens, I expect an XTrap error to occur.
  • Hello!

    I have a few MMO games downloaded but I only play CF right now.
    I had Norton which expired 3 days ago so now I have AVG internet security(Temporary).
    I have Iobit malware fighter (Ccleaner as well).
    I have MODS for crossfire only, which are KillMarks and login screen etc. No
    Version.ini file [READ ONLY] is unchecked!

    I restarted my computer and started it on safe mode with Networking as you said and opened Crossfire as usual:
    z8Games>Crossfire>G4box
    but I had the exact same problem saying 'Failed to download version.ini'

    That is it! Any idea how to fix this?
  • If you have WOW, delete ALL mods for that game, take your ADDON folder and delete that. That is what caused the last person I helped this same problem, and me.
    Also unistall Iobit Malware Fighter completely, ccleaner is fine to have, I use it.
    Empty your recycle bin out, anything in there can still affect your game, Disable Norton completely, even dormant it will still activate when anything connects to the internet, as does Iobit, either disable Norton or uninstall and delete all files of it off your computer.
    Disable AVG completely.
    There is a program or files on your computer that is causing the game to not write the file because the game encounters something and believes that upon writing the file that it can become infected, however this will 99.999999999% never happen.
    I had this exact problem, I unistalled Iobit, deleted WoW addons, deleted Minecraft mod files, unistalled System Care 5, unistalled and deleted Microsoft Expression recorder, unistalled and deleted Camista. And then my game worked flawlessly.

    Also, when did you install those mods? And when you did install them did the game work fine afterwards?
  • strg+ alt+ ent--> task manager --> processes --> search engine.exe --> rightclick ---> end process
  • 'Failed to download version.ini' can ALSO be caused due to no internet connection which obviously isn't the answer...
  • Failed to load version.ini

    Guys follow this crossfire-z8 link and follow it's instructions - http://forum.z8games.com/showthread.php?t=210253

    worked for me even after the failed attempt to delete cookies, delete xtrap folder and version.ini

    This manually patch will allow you to go back to nightfall patch time and allows patcher to execute and updates the xtrap and in a few seconds u are in.

    'Failed to download version.ini' happens when you don't have an internet connection. Cross Fire requires one to play.
    Please explain how my members are on vent talking yet stil have this problem?

    Haven't tried logging on to Cross Fire, so I didn't realize everyone was getting this, but that also happens when you try to start CF with no internet connection.
  • I know that, its failing to connect to the server for whatever reason. Working on a solution now.

  • SOLUTION

    Open up your Version.ini file from your Crossfire folder. Open it up as notepad.

    Then copy and paste this:
    [VERSION]
    LatestVersion = 1092
    MinimalVersion= 1077
    OwnVersion = 5

    [DOWNLOAD]
    server1 = http://cfpatch.z8games.com/download/

    [SERVER]
    COUNT = 1
    IP1 =74.200.6.133
    PORT1 =13008

    [HGW]
    PORT=16666
    SERVER1=74.200.6.161
    SERVER2=74.200.6.163
    POD1=50
    POD2=50

    1. Then save it in your Crossfire folder. If it won't allow you to save it in your Crossfire folder then save it somewhere else (Desktop) and then copy and replace it to your Crossfire folder.
    2. Right click on the file called Version.ini then tick the read-only option and click apply.
    3. Make sure you delete everything in the x-trap folder.
    4. Now Start Crossfire and it should work.

    This works 100% and it does not bring the "Download the latest version of Crossfire" error.
