Upgrading my PC...?
This is my PC.
So today I received a 3.0 ghz processor and a 512 MB RAM for free.
Now I want to know if my PC is compatible.
The processor was Intel Pentium 4 and the RAM was 512mb 1rx8 pc2-4200u-444-12- D3. (Not very tech savvy so ask if this isn't the info you need, I was just reading the labels on the 2 pieces.)
I want to know if I can upgrade and if so could someone be so kind as to tell me how to do so?
I've never had to upgrade my PC, but I've hard countless people say it's easy, so I'm sure it shouldn't be much trouble giving me a brief summary of the process involved?

Technically, the CPU your using is a faster CPU (Dual Core, later CPU generation then the P4 Series). CF should use the P4 more effectively, but we will see
Anyways, yes the CPU and Ram are both supported. the 512MB of DDR2 you have is slower then the one you currently have in your system, but every little bit of ram counts when your only running 1Gb stock. It's not slow enough to not add to your system.

Dual core is newer, but mine is only 1.6, wouldn't 3.0 be a big improvement?
"It's not slow enough to not add to your system."
So I SHOULD add them? (Making sure you didn't add an extra "not" in there by accident.)
Just on a quick guess, how much of an improvement would adding them both make?
Thanks for the guides

You should add the ram.
CPU..Not sure.
Crossfire uses the first core of a multicore cpu. your cpu has 2 cores, the p4 has 1.
even though 1.6 is lower then 3, the way the cpu processes data (two cores, better coding) makes it better then an older cpu with 1 core.
In saying all that, crossfire specifically might work better because of how it will use the P4, but there is no guaruntee. Your windows operating system enviroment / other applications however will most likely not perform as well.
Trying to make this a superbasic explination really quickly, so my apologies. -

Perfectly good explanation, I'll add the RAM and test out the CPU. Hope it all works out well

Delaco pretty much ninja'd me right there but ill just add one thing. You will need more ram than 1gb. With all the other applications running in the background chances are most of it will be eaten up and recently, its been known that CF needs roughly 1gb for itself to run smoothly.
They were considering updating the spec requirements on the website to accommodate for that. -

What about non-cf programs?
Say Photoshop, GTA:SA, etc...(basically anything other than CF) -

You should be fine with them. I used to run GTA:SA on my old pc (Celeron 2.0 GHZ, 1GB Ram, No graphics card) okish.
Photoshop... might run slow -

I mean, I can run PS and SA almost lag free at most times, but would it affect boot times(including CF)?
