Will have to agree with Faith here. All I can find on the topic is very very old dating back more than a year.
Re-install the game, clean install, and before installing close all internet windows and and disable your anti-virus.
After installation restart your computer in Safe Mode if you can, neither restart nor Safe Mode is necessary but sometimes recommended.
If this doesn't fix your problem let me know.

It sounds like you've changed a file name, or something, in the main Crossfire folder. Locate to the main crossfire folder, and make sure "G4_box.exe" and "crossfire.exe" are still there with the exact same names. If you rename them in the main Crossfire directory, you will receive an error.
