Is it possible to physically break a weapon? (as in can't use it anymore)

I've been playing without repairing my m16 for sometime now and it's status has went from green to yellow to orange to red. Now its completely black but I can still use it in battle. I always thought that it was possible break a weapon until it was unuseable. Anyone ever done this before?
