New patch = new headaches
Windows XP Professional fully up to date
Avast AV - checked my virus vault and NOTHING for Crossfire in it
I got the new patch this morning and I have since re-installed CF three times today. I am able to log on and begin playing but then get a pop up saying that a file has changed and the game closes. After that I have to re-install......
This has been an on going issue for many people and since my AV has nothing in the virus vault the problem obviously is not my AV. It almost seems like a communication problem between the CF files and the damn Game Watcher thing; the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.....
I just finished uninstalling the game, deleted the folder in my programs, ran a registry cleaner and fixed all errors, rebooted and downloaded it YET AGAIN...... I am going to be royally ****ed if I can't get this damn thing to work. I am one of those people that actually pays for ZP (I do so on a regular basis) and I feel like I am being cheated by these kinds of errors.
Don't be coming at me with "turn off your AV" because I've already verified that my AV is NOT THE ISSUE. I've also verified that my Windows firewall is NOT blocking this, nor is this an issue with the firewall on my modem as it is turned off.

As inkylies said, the way i got around this problem was altering the 'version' notepad document.
Go to where ever crossfire is installed (e.g c:/programfiles/z8/crossfire)
open the file called version (it's in notepad format), and change the latest version to 1090. save the file somewhere else (such as desktop) and drag the file to the crossfire location. select the option for replacing the old file for the new one.
change the file properties to 'read only', and crossfire should play.
(for if you can't be bothered to click a link). I had the same issue you had, and this worked for that too (it does mean you may need to alter the file after every patch, but it's sure better than constantly redownloading.
