The game was lagging because the mass swarm of players from todays livestream event.. the game should be back to normal by now

There was an issue during the day that cause a massive lagg on the servers. The problem was quickly looked at and a small fix was done for the time being.
The servers are not at their best shape at the moment, but they are playable

In regards to your ping, it fluctuates with your internet traffic. Sometimes closing intense internet-using programs such as web browsers or uTorrents can lower your ping a little, but for the most part it's a distance issue which really cannot be solved unless you move closer to Canada!
