    it isn't even close

Swimming does everything for you that running does + works a ton more muscles groups.

Just switch up your stroke every so often.
  • swimming is alot better,

not only does it excerise most of your body

but running causes wear and tear on your body
  • Swimming does indeed work everything a lot better and you tend to improve your stamina in the process.

    You guys are young.

    running wont hurt ya.

    but, swimming is better
  • Swimming is more of a full-body exercise, and is more safe, so long as you don't swim into jellyfish.

    Oum4l.gif
  • Running is better.

    Because swimming has no value.

When the world floods, they'll be swimming, but I'll be in a boat.
    idiots.

When the world floods, running will be extremely useful.

Also, when the world dries, you'll be running, but I'll be in a car :)
  • The **** do these kids know about fitness.

Do HIIT (High intensity interval training). It burns more calories than both swimming and 'running'. It involves really intense sprinting drills and takes around 10-20 minutes. Its the type of workout that puts you on your knees gasping for air, but you'll notice strength improvements in your legs fast and fat dissapear.

You know nothing about reading comprehension. He asked for opinions on swimming and running.

That's like me asking which is better blondes or brunettes?, and you respond with. I love dudes.
  • I await tastys reply...

OT: Out of my inexperience I would say swimming, as you can switch your stroke and work different muscle groups, as well as working on your endurance and stamina.

You know nothing about reading comprehension. I wasn't referring to the OP with my post, I was referring to the above people who mentioned their opinions on more beneficial workouts without any reasoning.

Since the OP wanted to know which one was better, I gave an alternative that was harder, but more rewarding with fat loss and muscle gain.

So you can get the **** out of this thread, as I'm pretty sure you have no fitness backround.

I hate people who instantly assume someone/everyone is ______.

    1. You are assuming everyone who has replied is a "kid".

    2. You are assuming everyone did not reason when making their opinions.

    3. People did not mention "more beneficial workouts", they were talking about whether swimming or running was better.

    4. You are assuming that dooplpk has no fitness background.

    5. Im_illest asked for a contrast between swimming and running.
You are assuming that he wants to get fit; for all you know he could be doing a research project.

    TL;DR
The above is me ranting about people that generalize everything.

    1. You're all ****ing kids.

    2. Yep.

    3. I know they didn't. I did, because I'm more educated in fitness. I don't see what the deal is, the others were mentioning their opinion on which exercise was better. Look at the replies, atleast 2-3 people said 'swimming because its better' or something along those lines. "Better", wow thats so descriptive and elaborate /sarcasm.

    4. He's a fatass.

    5. Exactly, he made no specifications as to whether he wanted muscle gain, fat loss, or just overall health improvement. So I suggested an option that included all of the above.
  • Like other people said swimming is probably better and more difficult due to having to use your whole body. In which running you mainly work your lower legs. Both of these sports are cardio workouts so that's good. The plus of swimming is that it works your whole body, if you can find an indoor pool, you can swim inside without having the affects of the weather, and if you don't swim often, it's nice just to get in a pool. Running really helps you with your lower body, but as you get older running will start to tear the ligaments in your knees and calves. At a young age though, there should be no signs of this. As for injuries, in swimming, unless you swim competitively like myself and you swim 6 days a week averaging about 4000-8000 yards a day, or your stroke is just horrible, you shouldn't get an injury. In running like I said before you can get leg injuries. The only downside of swimming is that you have to make an effort to find a pool, go change into a swim suit, swim, and for most people take a shower after. In running, you put on some athletic shorts, some decent shoes and socks, and your workout will begin. That's my view of swimming vs running.
  • Running is better for you if you are on land and there is a dog chasing you for example. Also if there are police or authorities trying to arrest you, running would be more conducive than swimming. If, however, you are in a body of water trying to avoid a shark, running is very difficult due to buoyancy, etc and swimming would be more advisable. If you could combine the two and run along the bottom of the ocean, swimming at the same time, you would turn into a superhuman. I hope this helps.
  • if i had a pool, this is what i would do:

swim until i get really lean (im not the thinnest chap, but still im not the largest chap) and then rotate to running and hitting the gym, because once i shed the pounds from swimming i could better utilize the benefits of running.

You can't ONLY do cardio to lose fat. You need to also have a very healthy diet.
  • running....in the swimming pool.

    ima stand by it.

that goes without saying, common sense.

He just asked for two specific types. You don't know what kind of condition he is in to prove he can even do intense exercise. You may know fitness but does not make you an expert. Also a healthy diet is helpful but not a VERY healthy one isn't required. It depends on the goals people want.

But it is true. Swimming is the best alternate for working out.
-less stressful on joints (if your body cannot endure the heavy pounding)
    -workouts the entire body
-focuses more of the upper body (if you just do laps)
-a wide variety of workouts can be done in the pool (any type of resistance)

Running pros are the cardio and I personally enjoy the breathing technique and the pounding (the proper way to avoid long term injuries).
Cons are the increase chances of injuries to your ankles and knee ligaments (which can put you out for a good while) along with the wear and tear of the bones and tissue between them.

What fitness background do you have?

Yes, HIIT is one of the best ways to get fit and fast; but he's not asking for training, which it is.

He discreetly asked for opinions on two differing exercises, not how to become some marine soldier.

Did you gain weight after high school? Because looking at your pictures from when you were at WEM it's easy to conclude that you devoted your life to sodas, take out, and xbox.

Marine soldier? HIIT is a very common training that most sprinters and football, tennis, and baseball players use. You don't need to be some super human.

I won state champions in MMA, and was a sprinter up until Junior Year. I've quit high school sports, got a job, and now devote myself to an excellent diet, and workout/cardio everyday. I'm not trying to sound like some macho, because I'm not, but I've did a fair share of research over the past 5 months, and that alongside AP Bio, and Anatomy have helped me gain a huge understanding for fitness.
