Just some insider info from a guy who lives in Silicon valley.
How is that insider info?
Nvidia cards use the same or more power than ATI cards on average...
Not only that the new line of ATI cards have 1.3 billion more transistors than the comparable Nvidia card, while having a die size 70% smaller. -

Where does the majority of ATI cards get their chips?
If you think ATI makes them all you're wrong.
Why is the die size smaller?
NVIDIA still has quality over quantity... http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/amd-vs-nvidia-who-makes-the-best-graphics-cards--699480
Im a computer science major specializing in networking but have spent the last 10 years working in the IT industry an living in the silicon valley.
Give me concrete evidence I am wrong.
In the meantime, it's not all bad news for Nvidia. Arguably, it has an edge in at least one important DX11 feature, the hardware tessellator. Designed to spew out huge numbers of polygons and therefore give games more geometric detail and realism than ever before, the tessellator could prove to be the killer feature in DX11. Early tests suggest Nvidia's chips have more tessellation power than ATI's.
Nvidia is also way ahead of ATI when it comes to stereoscopic 3D. Nvidia's 3D Vision technology is the best way to get 3D on your PC today. It works with a large number of games and is also compatible with certain formats of 3D movies including Blu-ray 3D. But like most other 3D display technologies, wearing a pair of geeky goggles is the price of participation. -

Nvidia's edge is in tessellation and 3D (like you said). However, since that article was written ATI has changed a lot about how their products do tessellation.
Smaller die size is better, there is no argument otherwise... Computer science, isn't the same as Computer Engineering, sorry. You might want to learn what your talking about, because you could lose potential clients when you make absurd statements like that. I know I wouldn't pay for services from someone who thinks larger less efficient dies are better.
Also, you linked to an article that is 2 years old. Correct me if I am wrong, but the 6000 series wasn't even out yet. At that time Nvidia, blew ATI out of the water, no question. This is however 2012, not 2010. For someone claiming such a pedigree, in the subject maybe it's time you look at comparison between current models.

Read the whole article before responding. Welcome to the year 2012.
Although this picture speaks for itself.
I will admit, in 2010 Nvidia ruled supreme no contest. -

The 7950 is cheaper than and performs better than the GTX 580. How is that the only redeeming thing. Man for someone in the IT industry, you are clueless.
The card isn't meant to be competing with the GTX 590. The GTX 590 is most likely the best GPU on the market. It is also ridiculously priced. -

Apparently from the same place Nvidia gets a majority of their chips.

Nice insider information you have. -
nVidia used to be lightyears ahead of AMD/ATI, but as Doop said, things have changed dramatically since then. Price-to-performance, AMD comes out on top. Hell in most cases you can crossfire two slightly lesser spec AMD cards and go beyond the specs of a single nVidia GPU of the same price.
That's a great card, don't get me wrong, I have the 1GB Black DD Edition myself, but unless OP's planning on playing beyond 1920x1080 resolution, 2GB for a 6870 isn't going to be utilized in most any market game outside BF3, which even then, the regular 6870 doesn't struggle with.

all i can wrote here is that i have now a Gigabyte Radeon HD 5870. my lowest fps in crossfire is ~170, with smoke, explosions and 8x8 players.
the max fps is ~200-210. i think there is a limit here in crossfire.
for the topic initiator, i recommend a 6950-6970 card. or, if he afford, a 79xx card. -

You can't compare AMD/ATI and Nvidia.
Nvidia offers better perfomance, but with more expensive price and it's warmer+requires more power.
AMD/ATI has decent perfomance compared to Nvidia, but it's cheaper, requires less power and isn't warm as Nvidia.
If ur choosing ~250$ gpu go with AMD/ATI
HD6950 > GTX560 TI
