One clan point is earned each time that a clan member gains 500 experience in a single game-play session. You can always view the clan points that you have accumulated, though only lieutenants and clan leaders can view the clan points that all of the members have earned

If your clan reached one of the top ranks then you won't earn any points against low ranked clans anymore. So you have to play against high ranked clans in order to get the chance to earn points.

So if the lower rank clan loses they still get a point for trying?

You'a have a character, there is such a class, so his low ranking is new to the 0 points At one point during the game .
