I like my HD 5770. It is "cheap" and able to play all available games on at least medium settings (e.g. BF3). It got almost the same specs as the HD6770 so get the last one if it is cheaper.
well...
the hd 5770's really are a good kind of VC, it has the power to run most of the games on decent settings altough it is cheap, but overall it is going to be obsolete in a few years, so it isn't really good to get them right now.
newer ones like the gtx 460 or 560 have a buffed up performance and a good overall price (i think it's around 150$) -
Yeah, I know. But I wouldn't consider a 560 cheap. Maybe the op could tell us what he actually means^^
well... 200 is cheap for my standards :x
but the 5770 is about 80$ if i remember it correctly e-e

I don't know why everyone in this board "loves" dual GPU settings so much. You will need more FPS to run a game smoothly, you can't play a lot of games that don't support dual GPU settings, you won't double your FPS - 80% more perfomance if the best result, you continously waste a lot of energy (in Germany where electricity is expensive this would make AT LEAST 100$ per year) and it is loud as hell as long you don't use a liquid cooling.
Dual GPU is only usefull when you don't want to play but want to take advantage of GPGPU or if you want to use more than 3 (for AMD) or 2 (for NVidia) monitors without buying an expensive "special" GPU. -

i guess he should go with a single GPU then, AMD preferably, since they're more economic energy wise, altough they lose some of it's power trying to keep thing quiet and eco-friendly

It depends on the bus of the second PCI-e slot while running the second card, some of them are at 16x and 8x, others are at 16x 4x. Often you won't get more than 60% performance.
The reason PCI-e 3.0 is going to be so valuable is because it will allow double GPU systems like the 460 2win or the 590/6990 to completely see their potential, running two cards in a 16x or 8x won't see the same performance as two cards running in a single 16x slot capable of the data transfer two cards running through it are capable of.
Also running a 560 or dual 460's is a good idea in theory, but as Smagjus said there is a lot of power draw from that, it can lessen the life of your power supply if you are over straining, that can just increase the price more to raise the cap power draw of your power supply.
That's why I personally prefer AMD for video cards as it stands, they are offering better performance per power and price consumption. -

You told us that you benchmark several games and hardware but did you try to run a GPU in a x4 PCIE 2.0 slot instead of x16 PCIE 2.0?It depends on the bus of the second PCI-e slot while running the second card, some of them are at 16x and 8x, others are at 16x 4x. intel celeron (r) 2.66ghz processor

it runs crossfire LA at 60 fps, altough it can drop to 30 when i have smoke on my screen -
I actually feel pity for you 74K37H47. I cannot not even play at 60 FPS cause of my input lag. I got stable 200 FPS with my HD5770 that is underclocked to 425 MHZ instead of 850 MHZ.
In my personal opinion it will take a few years until Crossfire and SLI run perfectly. The drivers and game engines need to get optimized for multi GPU settings. But nobody is willing to invest money when there are just a few people who own rigs with more than one GPU. -

I got my AMD XFX 6870 Dual Dissipation XXX Edition for around $170, one of the best GPUs I've used. I much prefer it over my SLI 470s.

From what I understand the i7 3150k or whatever isn't so much a massive performance increase as it is a overclocking and multithreading monster, it was basically intel's response to Bulldozer throwing out an eight core.
