What are your recommendations for video cards. I'm looking for something cheap but still good.

    Define 'cheap'.

    from 20 to 300 bucks...
    cheap and good?
460's with SLI if you will have more money later :3
  • I like my HD 5770. It is "cheap" and able to play all available games on at least medium settings (e.g. BF3). It got almost the same specs as the HD6770 so get the last one if it is cheaper.

    well...
the hd 5770's really are a good kind of VC, it has the power to run most of the games on decent settings altough it is cheap, but overall it is going to be obsolete in a few years, so it isn't really good to get them right now.

newer ones like the gtx 460 or 560 have a buffed up performance and a good overall price (i think it's around 150$)
  • Yeah, I know. But I wouldn't consider a 560 cheap. Maybe the op could tell us what he actually means^^

well... 200 is cheap for my standards :x
but the 5770 is about 80$ if i remember it correctly e-e
don't know if it supports crossfire tough :c (NOT THE GAME)

    EDIT:
130 dollars for a good one, not a good price tough, altough it's cheaper than the 460 (200 bucks)
i guess you could do a little buff to it making usage of it in crossfireX hm...
gotta ask moofz or cookz tough
  • I don't know why everyone in this board "loves" dual GPU settings so much. You will need more FPS to run a game smoothly, you can't play a lot of games that don't support dual GPU settings, you won't double your FPS - 80% more perfomance if the best result, you continously waste a lot of energy (in Germany where electricity is expensive this would make AT LEAST 100$ per year) and it is loud as hell as long you don't use a liquid cooling.

Dual GPU is only usefull when you don't want to play but want to take advantage of GPGPU or if you want to use more than 3 (for AMD) or 2 (for NVidia) monitors without buying an expensive "special" GPU.

well it can be cheaper and offer quite the punch, but hell, i didn't knew electricity was so expensive in germany :s
my energy expenses only got like, 20$ higher since i got a dual 460 .--.
    well...
i guess he should go with a single GPU then, AMD preferably, since they're more economic energy wise, altough they lose some of it's power trying to keep thing quiet and eco-friendly :3

HD 6950 then :x 240$ in e-bay, altough i think you can find it for less than 220 :3
  • Protip, 80%? what?

It depends on the bus of the second PCI-e slot while running the second card, some of them are at 16x and 8x, others are at 16x 4x. Often you won't get more than 60% performance.

The reason PCI-e 3.0 is going to be so valuable is because it will allow double GPU systems like the 460 2win or the 590/6990 to completely see their potential, running two cards in a 16x or 8x won't see the same performance as two cards running in a single 16x slot capable of the data transfer two cards running through it are capable of.

Also running a 560 or dual 460's is a good idea in theory, but as Smagjus said there is a lot of power draw from that, it can lessen the life of your power supply if you are over straining, that can just increase the price more to raise the cap power draw of your power supply.

That's why I personally prefer AMD for video cards as it stands, they are offering better performance per power and price consumption.

i'm an evil genius wh wants to destroy the world's ecossystems by using too much power with double 460's >:3
altough the 1050w psu should be enough for both :x

Sorry for my spelling mistakes. I was a little upset^^ But you got my point.

You told us that you benchmark several games and hardware but did you try to run a GPU in a x4 PCIE 2.0 slot instead of x16 PCIE 2.0?

The difference shouldn't be more than 10% since the data transfer rate is not the limiting factor (I got a lot of benchmarks proving that but those are in German). A difference between x16 and x8 shouldn't be noticeable.

Would be enough for 4 of them :o

    hm...
wondering when we will be able to unlock full performance with dual SLI or crossfireX...
well, i'm still using the oldie who has the ATI x1050 LOL
    1 gb ddr2 ram
    intel celeron (r) 2.66ghz processor
    gigabyte 8vm533-r2 mobo

it runs crossfire LA at 60 fps, altough it can drop to 30 when i have smoke on my screen
  • I actually feel pity for you 74K37H47. I cannot not even play at 60 FPS cause of my input lag. I got stable 200 FPS with my HD5770 that is underclocked to 425 MHZ instead of 850 MHZ.

In my personal opinion it will take a few years until Crossfire and SLI run perfectly. The drivers and game engines need to get optimized for multi GPU settings. But nobody is willing to invest money when there are just a few people who own rigs with more than one GPU.

    heheh :3
the oldie can be grumpy, but he can run some good 'ol videogames xD

anyways, i think i will sell my current gaming rig (amd phenom II x6 1100 BE + dual 460's) and buy a nice and new rig when i get my next paycheck :3
  • How much is a 6870 over there?

    I'd search but I'm lazy.

I got my AMD XFX 6870 Dual Dissipation XXX Edition for around $170, one of the best GPUs I've used. I much prefer it over my SLI 470s.

    hm...
    cookz
good deal to sell my current gaming rig for a new one that i will be able to build with 4k dollah?

4 grand? You won't have to spend over 2.5.

i7 2600k Crossfire 6950s or 6870s, 8 gigs of ram, good sized ssd raid 0 some caviar blacks and toss in a strong PSU/mobo.

    You'll be set.

ALSO PCI-e 3.0 is a total waste right now for socket 1155, the cpu doesn't even have the capability to process it. Not sure about socket 2011.

meh i'll wait until the new chipset comes out then e-e

From what I understand the i7 3150k or whatever isn't so much a massive performance increase as it is a overclocking and multithreading monster, it was basically intel's response to Bulldozer throwing out an eight core.

Edit: Nevermind, I decided to do a bit of research, holy HELL socket 2011 is insane.

Cause it is for Sandybridge e - you know what the "e" is short for or? ;)

Do you mean this baby? 31_m.png

Cookz is going to sell all 3 of his PC's and buy a new pc with it. According to him.

    but...
what the f*ck does he do with his pc to need even more power than the Oc'ed i5-2500k he has?

    Infinite power.

that's already pretty much infinite power...
