Why does Crossfire use RTP and ICMP?
When i lately looked up the logs of my network monitor i noticed that crossfire does not only uses TCP and UDP - no it uses RTP sometimes too
thats weird to me since CF does not have voice chat or anything else
here is one of the captured packets to show what i mean...
(*** is my IP)
1353 00:27:30 10.11.2011 72.9951170 109.203.116.203 ***.***.***.*** RTP RTP:PayloadType = 1016 Audio, 8000Hz [1 Channel], SSRC = 24655872, Seq = 1519, TimeStamp = 2186176856, Mark
anyone who can explain why it does this?
and the other thing is that i noticed the crossfire client tries to send and recieve ICMP packets especially after games
anyway obviously its not necessary to play since my network does not allow to send or recieve any ICMP packets at all
i guess this is for statistics about ping...?

im a bit confused about this - please enlighten me

Well ICMP is generally used for error reporting to the OS ... so I would guess you see when more so at end when transmitting stats data as it is checking for errors ...
RDP is generally used from remote control of work stations ... so don't know why it would have much of this traffic ... -

ICMP is generally to check if there is a counterpart and to check if u can reach him
so they try to ping me
i guess also its for stats... -
try the ha.cking sites...they know more about crossfire than z8....unfortunally
Keep in mind that nobody in Z8 sees any of the CF source code. That's only worked on by the developers.
I believe Lithtech Jupiter uses RTP for some of its data transfer. Next time I play I'll take a look at the ICMP packets myself and possibly shed some light on it.
