Crossfire on Steam?
What would it take to have Crossfire available as a Steam game?
Obviously the first problem I can think of is the overlay making it unplayable as it crashes with Wire, Mumble and TS3 overlay. The other thing is how many bugs it has, but are they really that many compared to the VN and CN versions?
When A.V.A went on Steam that game blew in size and community. Lots of players simply found it easier to perform two clicks and have a free2play game ready in their library. It got lots of players who wouldn't of downloaded the game otherwise to do so, and it introduced the game to many already existing teams.
I think if Crossfire was put on Steam it would gain a lot of new players, which means more competition plus more money for Z8. Essentially Z8 wants more customers but they aren't sponsoring any events to bring any new players in.
I guess your first response is "Steam wouldn't pickup a s**t game like CF", but lets see if we can discuss this logically. How far away are we from a such goal? What needs to be done to achieve this?

I'm actually extremely surprised that XFire works in Cross Fire considering the coding for Cross Fire was (apparently) done very poorly, so perhaps Steam could work given some effort.
If Steam brought in more English speaking players I would definitely support this idea, but then again why would people play Cross Fire on Steam when they can play MW3, Battlefield 3, Left for Dead, etc. (I don't really know what Steam offers so whatever). -

God yes, the one in bold is probably the most notable thing that would occur.
As for the other stuff, the difference between CF and the games listed there is obviously the P2P vs F2P factor.
Even if so, some people like to try something different so I'm pretty sure CF would still get quite a bit of exposures especially with its constant updates in comparison. -
Not that I don't support the idea. But AVA still use gameguard and not steam's AC. Ok, there's not much hackers in AVA, but that's only because not much players play it. I mean, there's way more players on CrossFire NA/UK than AVA (hosted by ijji).
But yeah, like Gods & Talon said, it could probably bring more people speaking english, with a bit of luck. Maybe the SA servers will probably solve that problem, who knows. But I'm still for this idea, ;p -
Personally I'd love to see this happen, and Steam would probably be more than willing to add CF, looking at how well they work with other software companies and portals, from big names like Windows Live down to game-specific like RIFT. Plus, Steam loves free games, since it draws in people to their client base. CF would benefit from easier invitations to game rooms, Steam messaging, automatic updating, not to mention a massive influx of (English speaking) players. Unfortunately, for something like this to happen, every part of of Cross Fire's bureaucracy would have to work things out with Steam... Smilegate's coding, NeoWiz's approval for distribution (Although they made it work with AVA, so this shouldn't be hard), Z8/Steam account linking or merging, plus access to game features through Xtrap. And so, the chance of CF becoming a game on Steam in the near future seems unlikely.

+1000 just simply put cross fire under the new "free to play" genre tab and it would boost popularity like crazy...
we would obviously still be using X-trap and not steam's vac or w/e, but simply just having it in the list of games and able to download it from steam would be great... (maybe bring some good cs players over here too):)
it wouldn't even bother me if the steam messenger or steam in-game wouldn't work in crossfire. I simply just want it on the list. -
There are multiple reasons CrossFire and steam would not work well together at this time. Many reason that are just from a coding reason. Though we're very likely to never see CrossFire on steam, we will always be promoting CrossFire on every free to play website. (We've been fixing a few issues with sites confused about the EU CrossFire).
It's not that we wouldn't like using steam to go along side many other great games both us Moderators and Administrators love playing, there's just to many reasons and conflicts that would cause more harm than good at this time.
Who knows though, things can change, and if the chance ever arises and an agreement is meant between all companies involved there's hope. -

That's what I originally thought as well (the bad coding would prevent it from getting on steam), however I then remembered XFire works well with Cross Fire, so that gave me hope.
Even though some steam functions might not work in Cross Fire, I'm sure it would at the very least be possible to put Cross Fire on steam without in game steam chat or whatever "extras" that steam offers (I don't use Steam myself other than once or twice in the past so I don't know what extra features there are). -
I think Saidin means by that quote that it's not as simple as uploading Cross Fire to Steam and it gets hosted simple as that.
In our situation that quote is irrelevant, because we know that it would take some work on G4Box's part.
Sorry for the double post, got ninja'd.
Hey look at that, 2400 posts -
Regarding what Saidin said in that thing, i doubt they ban thousands of players on the daily =/ And what would be nice is a 2nd Lt server rank limit.
Regarding the thread. Aight so it won't work to get the game on Steam, but putting it on Steam is going to get 999x more players than promoting it on any free2play game website and you know it. The simple fact that it would take 2 clicks to try out the game is unbeatable.
Z8 can still do a lot more to sponsor events to get more players, im not taking about putting banners on other websites. Im talking about at least getting a decent reply (or a reply to begin with) when someone approaches with a sponsorship idea for an event. For example SGI and ESL are working together to bring events and competition in CF EU via ESL, I am guessing that CF EU will even work things out with X-Trap not conflicting ESL Wire anymore. Why couldn't Z8 of done that with ESL years ago when the problem first came out? And what happened to Tournaments hosted by Z8? There were only 2 and then they stopped, why? Lack of effort? Nobody could be asked to run it?
Fair enough Z8 IP blocked the EU, excluding UK, but what's their plan about getting new players into the game as they will loose a lot potential registrations coming from the EU. This has already begun and I don't see Z8 promoting anything to get more UK or NA players to the game. -
No one even played on UK5 while it was SFC+, so since the idea of a high ranked server failed I doubt we'll see a 2nd lt + server in a long time.
****ing stupid UK people ruined it for the rest of us.
(The ones that didn't play on UK5 anyways). -
Still trying to see how Z8 will profit by having a new contract with Steam. Yea new players and a better anti-cheat engine.
But at the same time, profits are lowered, maybe by a lot (cause Valve is idk...2big).
I'm just trying to play a little devil's advocate...kinda sorta -
i think they should
I think they should. The security is i think the #1 thing that would improve. There are always hackers in this and I think Steam could do a great job with that. I heard though that z8 games if they quit the contract with xfire, they would pay a lot of money and they wouldn't want to do that. I am not sure though. It would bring more players in but what about the other cf versions? Remember there is more than just cf american version :P -

If more and new players played, there would be more people who buy zp, in turn this will mean z8 games will get more money in the long run.
But z8 games cares too much about now and whats in it for them straight away.
