Cross fire just plain won't work.

I have been playing crossfire for over a year. I have not had any problems outsside of occasional unjust Hack Tool Detected stuff. After the most recent patch I would start crossfire and it would take me to the beginning of the login page (where you see all the zombies and it takes over full screen) but it would just sit there and say loading until eternity (20mins is longest i waited) and I had to ctrl+alt+del to get out of the program. This happened every time. So I uninstalled crossfire and deleted anything that I could find that was associated with it (as I had read to do in a post offering solutions). Re-installed and nothing changed. So I went through ALL my firewall stuff to make sure it was being allowed in case some windows update snuck in and changed my settings. This didn't work. So I figured I would restore my computer to an earlier date (have win7) in case I just plain missed something. I chose a date before any Oct. patches. I then went to start crossfire thinking it would reload these patches. Instead it says "File is changed: W[2007] L[0] crossfire.exe". I went to the post that offered fixes for these problems. I downloaded the fix for the crossfire.exe error and nothing changed. So I figured screw it I'll just un-install from THIS point and re-install hoping that any sneaky updates would be gone and that this would work. I now get the error saying my uninstall.exe is the wrong one and I can not unistall. So now I have NOWHERE to go. The fix patches don't work, i can't re-download all of crossfire seeing as i cant uninstall it. Any suggestions? Please, I have been going at this for 3 days.

  • Clean up your computer by reverting a system restore point, or even farther back to the beginning by resetting to factory settings.

Remember to backup any personal files before proceeding as it will basically wipe a good portion of the hard disk clean (for the factory settings)

oh and a protip: Don't create a wall of text, have nicely created paragraphs. You don't have to follow my example by having almost a sentence paragraph, but I just do it for clarity's sake.
  • ok will try not to block type.

And thanks for the reply but I already did do a system retore point. Going back any further than a month before the problem started (which is what I did) seems like a moot point.

That should have been well enough of a backtrack as there was not an existing problem at that time.
  • OK, the good news, I was able to finagle my way back to the original problem. I no longer have the crossfire.exe problem. But now I'm back to the loading please wait page that'll stay there until it times out (at least it times out now).

There is something new on my crossfire shortcut which is the windows 7 shield. From what I can gather from reading posts is this may be related to the problem other people are having with the OS or anti-virus seeing it as a virus.

However, when I downloaded and installed and ran crossfire I had turned off my firewall in ALL locations including on my domain profile and knocked down any of my security so that a 3rd grader could spill his sippy cup on his keyboard and accidently hack my system.

I also run crossfire as administrator to no avail. Does anyone else have windows 7? Are you experiencing any problems? I have all the recent updates including the new service pack.
  • Don't just turn off the Antivirus and Firewall, allow exceptions to be made within the programs to allow a flow of traffic between CF and Xtrap to their servers and such.

And don't diss the sippy cup bro. That some's serious ball you're throwing.

I play CF as administrator and under windows xp compatibility settings (service pack 2)

Try to re-install it again, do a more CLEAN way this time ok?
Here's the post on how to do that properly:
