The link to the forums that gives a detailed walkthrough on how to improve your computers performance for games is down for some reason right now.
Anyways the reason windows 7 and Vista have these ping spikes is due to how they handle sound coming through the network.
If for any reason the sound becomes unsynchronized or glitches, windows 7 and vista stop all other processes intill the problem passes This leads to a couple seconds of no input from the network and a freeze up on your computer for a couple seconds.
Changing the network throtling to FFFFFFFF basically tells the computer to commit as much resources it can to fix the problem rather then just use a small amount and frreeze everything else up.
The problem may still happen but it will happen a lot less.
Also another concern. If your using Wifi and there is a microwave nearby to the modem, anytime the microwave is on it will interfere with the wifi single and may even completely disconnect you from the internet. -

Sometimes windows does this. I dont know why but it does.
One thing that I have tried and worked is:
♦ Start CF
♦ Log in to a Server
♦ Change the settings to Window Mode
♦ Press "Alt"+Ctrl"+"Delete"
♦ Select Task Manager
♦ Click Processes (Second tab from your left)
♦ Look for CrossFire under "Name"
♦ Right Click on the CF Process
♦ Go to "Set Priority"
♦ Change it to low and then check your ping go in game and check your ping
♦ If that does not work, Change it to high and go in game and check your ping
♦ If this does work, you will need to do this every time you start CF. -

It's actually because Vista and 7 refresh all their packets once a minute, unlike XP's constant streaming of information, but it's whatever.
