The egg.
The current chicken we know to be a chicken evolved from a previous form of chicken.
Evolution does not take place while the chicken is alive, evolution takes place in the way the chicken is coded and devlopes in the egg.
Chicken type A lays an egg of Chicken type B, then Chicken type B hatches. An egg of Chicken type A will never hatch into a Chicken type B.
Therefore, the egg came first.

I was reading Word of Notch hoping they would release Minecraft 1.9 and I saw the Chicken and Eggs thing.
Check it out, it actually makes sense.

This is pretty much my argument in this riddle.
Technically.. it has no answer. A circle has no beginning. Chicken lays egg. Egg hatches chicken.
Chicken A or B, its still a chicken.. hatched from an egg... laid by a chicken. And so on.
Now what? -

Im speaking as a species... not saying this chicken is different to this chicken therefore produces this chicken making the egg of that chicken come first.

Now you're just sitting halfway between both commitments to make the question work.
Which came first? The Chicken or Chicken v2.0?
By your logic we should still be considered to be of the same species of monkey we originally came from. -

Thats the idea.
Its a discussion that has no answer. You can try and provide and explanation and back it up as you did. Im not saying youre right or wrong.
Your idea bases of a mutation making a different chicken from an egg. Making the egg first. But then you could say that a protein from Chicken A makes Egg A and so forth to the "beginning" of this chain (A). What came first.. chicken (A) or egg (A)?
I want others' point of view on this aswell and compare each theory. Its a bit of early morning fun.Pfft.

I didn't care for it much either. Was a great read for my literature points back in public school though. College level reading comprehension in 5th grade. Great testing they have there. -

No. The entire argument is whether or not the shell and everything inside is an egg, or only the initial part and then the shell once the egg has been fertilized.
That has nothing to do with sub-catagories and being vague. -
