We're all mass murders aren't we?
So to start off, this whole little thread is inspired by another game where you command armies against others or the computer, its part of the total war series. I had around 1000 troops and barely “saved” my army by loosing 500 soldiers while killing ¾’s of the enemies superior forces, which was around 3000.
The situation made me wonder:
Since when did it become okay to kill so indiscriminately in games?
Has this effected me in the real world at all?
Then I came upon the estimation of just how much I’ve killed virtually, directly and indirectly, the number easily soars past what I thought it could’ve been. So how much have you killed?

In my opinion, in games that involve violence, the whole concept of death is played down in such a way that you are then shrouded from the deeds you commit. On crossfire, you're killing evil, zombies, mutants, terrorists, and servants of a under-cover totalitarian regime. i think if people were aware of the sheer amount of killings they have committed they'd be far less keen to spraydown anything that moves. I'm not trying to say that one should feel poorly for their actions, but just take a second and realize what you've done.
Well for starters I went through the pokemon phase as a kid, so no I don't go around thinking homicidal thoughts. I never truly thought about killing another person because of playing violent games, if I ever have thought about commiting a violent act it's due to my own self, not a game.
In total my guess was at least over 1million, that's probably the minimum value, the maximum has to be lower than 20 billion.

Murder is the unlawful killing of another human being with "malice aforethought", and generally this state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter). As the loss of a human being inflicts enormous grief upon the individuals close to the victim, as well as the fact that the commission of a murder is highly detrimental to the good order within society, most societies both present and in antiquity have considered it a most serious crime worthy of the harshest of punishment. In most countries, a person convicted of murder is typically given a long prison sentence, possibly a life sentence where permitted, and in some countries, the death penalty may be imposed for such an act — though this practice is becoming less common.[1] In most countries, there is no statute of limitations for murder (no time limit for prosecuting someone for murder). A person who commits murder is called a murderer .
Murder is killing a human. You aren't killing humans. You have the perception that are you are. But that is a mental perception, and not everyone looks at it the same way. -
Yeah I know, but I guess I was improperly using the word by stretching it to include virtual beings that are non-existent. Kinda beside the point though =P
No it isn't. Murder is a moral idealism created by a society intent on peace. The idea of murder is that killing people is wrong. But who are you killing? If you stab a pillow dressed like a person to death are you a murderer? No. So why is killing colorful pixels in the shape of a person murder? -

To be honest I posted this right after the game crashed. So yeah quite a bit of rage there.
As for the stupid part, what part of it? Guess if I don't see it, it must seem awfully stupid.
About the usage of the word murder, I used it improperly, if there's a better word for what I was attempting to say state it please, would be good to know. -

The only word you can use is personal perception. You yourself believe yourself to be killing yourself based upon your own morals. Most other people won't feel the same way about it. -

Rage, something i don't see at all. Wanna know what i see? A kid wanting to look smart by writing an essay on a stupid theme, but ending up looking like an idiot.
Killing people on a video game is far from ever being murder, and if you actually get bothered for killing virtual people or start thinking about killing others simply because of a game than you should really consider removing your life. -

I'm not sure how to respond to the remark about my defintion of killing extending to the virtual, I honestly never thought much of it, until recently.
I'm quite aware of that thought process that I actually partake in myself. I just had the urge to wonder how many things I've overseen the doom of virtually, and others as well. -

You take what I wrote up the wrong way, I honestly have no feeling of affection for the things that have been killed virtually, this whole thing isn't to make it seem like I symphathize with the unreal anyway.
I suppose it is silly to write something like this up, but I was curious of others takes which you have certainly provided. The wording I've used in this compostion has already been brought into question, and will be ideally not used in the same way in the future. -

Since killing the enemy bacame the goal of a game. Duh. Does killing things in a virtual environment affect you in the real world? No. Before violent videogames, kids would just pretend to shoot eachother/imaginary enemies. Or they would use little toy soldiers in staged fights. Videogames just add graphics and visualisation (and takes away your invulnerability)
The concept of death isn't shrouded down in those games or in videogames. Killing is the point of such games, so killing is what you do. What you call "shrouding down", the act of depecting the enemies you kill as "bad guys", is just a normal thing in games.... Games always need to give you a reason to kill your enemies: noone will play a game that says "here is a gun, now go outside and kill people that won't try to hurt you, did nothing wrong and are all law-abiding citizens. You will also get nothing for killing them.". (Yes, I know you kill innocent people in GTA, but those are not the ones that the game tells you to kill) -
hm i killed over 100k in this game. i am not sure how many in CS since the early versions. well and i play zombie-games as well. pretty sure i am close to a million.
i feel sad in a way, but also angry. those games made me become the killing machine i am today in Real life. can t wait to go off. -

Please send me a link to the games that made you put people in your basement. (pms will do) -
I personally think it's because of all the issues the media says; What if you can do that one thing society tells you something that you can't do? It's not like in the future i'll be some serial killer, but it's nice to get rid of that stress.
I wouldn't understand how they would do it for drugs / r4pe though. -
You do since you posted.
I don't care about the reasons as to why, I only care that someone would even bring up a point like this.
The fact is that regardless of if we are or are not murderers, people will continue to play video games.
Hence, why no one should give a damn, because not only is it completely irrelevant, but no one is going to gain any new relevant or somehow insightful knowledge. -
A sane person can distinguish between killing animations on a computer screen and putting a bullet in someones head in real life, and recognize that one is okay and the other is wrong.
In fairness, the reg is a little better in real life. -

you're trying too hard, just go to bed. I could insert some words of wisdom if i wanted but that would show I cared like yourself. Obviously you do. -

you are caring regardless, i am not stating any specific reason as to what you were caring about, my statement was general but valid. -
I will say this. If i see one more post that looks like a hate....I shall post ponies.
Do not tempt me.
Also, video games do have the potential to change thinking patterns in people, especially when you compare gamers to non-gamers. But the ultimate decision is up to yourself, don't blame video games for affecting your ability to live a life (or a good life) blame yourself for getting sucked in. -
