Have I Reached the Deadly Plateau?

I feel like I have reached a plateau in this game.
What I mean by this is simple; my performance in games is not increasing anymore.

You know how when noobs first start this game they don't do too well but if you take a semi-longitudinal study on these "noobs" 1 year later, you would see or hopefully see a dramatic increase in skill.
This skill refers to overall performance whether it be sniping, knifing, etc.

How do I know I have reached this plateau?
Well, I do the same every game--of course I always try to have some fun but in pubs, I always tend to end up in the top 3 of each game.

What about scrims?
Well, I have my ups and downs but how do I know that when I died it wasn't a simple coincidence.

Some kills I get are done unconsciously, I never expected a headshot but somehow I get one.

How do I know the enemy didn't get "lucky?"
Of course there are better players than me thats for sure. I can see the obvious difference in skill when I come across higher skilled players but what about me as an individual? Have I really improved or is it just a psychological effect where I think I'm improving by doing well in Pubs/Scrims but I have remained the same skill level throughout?

As I play more, I realize two factors that come into play. Reflex and Accuracy.
In high level games, these two factors always come to mind.
If two snipers both see each other at the same time, reflex + accuracy will determine the winner.

I see these two factors as something to improve upon whereas map coordination and communication seems rather difficult to examine.
Some matches, my decision to go to a certain place works very well, and sometimes it doesn't.
I don't think my logic in this game is the issue.
So is it really the issue of quickly aiming and being precise + reflex?

Do these better players simply have better aiming and reflex? I mean its obvious that these two factors play a major role in a FPS game.
But as an individual, is it only these two that I must work on to get better?
I would go into the discussion of genetics and how that plays a role in muscle memory and reflexes but that isn't needed here.

TL;DR: for those who didn't read and want to comment. just note: don't comment and say something that can be easily refuted by my article/story/w/e. ^.

    Okay, after skimming through it.

    Practice = Skill?

    Or wut..?

I agree with practice = skill , but how do I know I am actually improving? Why is it that some people can reach a higher level of skill while playing less than others? I play CF for a couple months and I am better than my friend who played 1.5 years and plays more than I do.

    Natural Talent.
Everyone can improve with practice but some find it easier thanks to traits they already posses.

My eyesight is very sensitive to movement and very quick at spotting changes and differences.
This leads to me being able to see a crouch walking ghost on the other side of the map in metro. I also have a fast reflex thanks to years of video game playing that help me counter ambushes from the ghost.

Others may have great hand eye coordination allowing them to place their cross hair accurately and quickly that it looks like a aimbot.

Practice can improve these these to a point but many start at and can continue to raise them to higher levels then the average player.
  • play with your clicks reversed. I recently changed to having my Primary Fire as my right click instead of left click and for some reason my killing prowess went up phenomenally...ask animalmo. hee hee hee.

Most likely you have settled in to a pattern of playing which will make you not get any better. I constantly switch what gun I use to improve my style of play. (also faster to pick up a dead guy's gun than reload in some cases >_> - Gotta keep them kill-steaks comin'!)

Basically: You need to change how you kill to get better. If you do nothing but say... Camp the staircase in Eagle Eye which sits next to A, then you will only get good at killing people on the staircase / in middle / from GR spawn. Then when you lose the cover provided, you still play as if you are fully covered.

Something to think about: On blackwidow in A side there is the train car. People stand behind this train car. Shoot their feet for some quick damage or possibly a kill. Trick shots like that will not only improve your aim but allow you to panic them. (and it will also cause you to get kicked by noobs...but that is besides the point >_>)
  • I don't really care about getting better anymore.

Right now i get kicked for mini ping or aimbot anyways.
  • I didn't read most of it, but from what I read for being a pubstar, yes. But if you actually care about getting better, why be in Alpha?

If you want to get better, try getting a team and scrimming E8 as much as possible. When you can get on but not able to scrim, play TD and work on your shot.

Gamesense, tips and tricks, etc, can always be improved.
  • Well if you want to get better go out and find people better than you.

Using these people as a goal to achieve, so to speak, you'll notice improvement. This requires, an honest assessment of your own skill level beforehand and constant practice to reach those goals.

Now a good aide for this is to practice with "good" players, if you're willing to copy them to an extent, you'll slowly get better.

The key though is practice, and then comparing yourself to a goal/standard you wish to achieve.
  • If you want to get better, go do competitive, that will increase your skill considerably.

Naaw, I've been playing competitively on and off for a year, and my personal gameplay has remained pretty consistently low.
I do better though, but only because I can rely on teammates.

Thread: Yeah, what someone said pretty much.. Change stuff up.
Review how you sit, how you move your mouse, audio settings, sensitivity settings etc.
Takes month to find something you're REALLY comfortable with.

(fixed some spacing in op since kids were crying)

yea this guy doesnt know the difference between a joke and crying clearly :)

play more and against more skilled players and you will learn to get better i believe - like someone else said people who play competitively are usually skilled players so that could help you out i guess. Save the replays of the matches you lose and watch the other team see what they did to beat you and how you can try stop them from doing it again - plus you might learn something new by watching them :P

Well, in tdm improving your knowledge of the map will help you get more grenade kills. I have also seen myself improve quite a lot in desertstorm the more I have learned about that map... I advice you to play some maps, you don't usually play, play a lot of pistol if you're used to play with sniper (and the opposite way). Buy new weapons and try them out...
If you have a friend from Europe, ask him to make a CF EU account for you, there's quite a lot of pros in that game... Playing that version imrpoved my skills :D

I put your problem in bold. If you want to improve beyond your individual skill, find a team. (preferably of people that are around your skill level)
It might not always increase your individual skill, but if you play together enough, communication will be better and you'll know how your teammates play, leading to a better gameplay/gamesense.
Secondly, in a team everyone usually plays the spot they're best at, so you can use your individual skill to the fullest.
  • improving at RL > improving at Videogames

    now go for it.

EDIT: i DONT mean to offend in any way. just my thoughts.
