Friends computer was freezeing up randomly for months
and now when she goes to turn it on it wont go past the first screen
any clue what it could be?

Has she taken everything out baring the PSU and motherboard, and left only the bare essentials in? (RAM, HDD, CPU)

Not sure what the first screen is, but getting anything means that the CPU and motherboard is working.

Deduce RAM by removing the sticks and putting in ONE that works.
If she makes it to bios, see if it finds the HDD.

she said that she hasnt touched anything really, but the sounds of it she should be able to take the hardrive out and save everything on that none the less right?

I had a similar problem, try to cleaning your video board. Maybe it's the dust or your CPU is very hot.

Meh, not necessarily.

Harddrives rarely just stop, they decay like you've described.
First CRC errors, then reboots and then, once the OS is damaged, won't boot at all.

But give it a try by all means, plug it in somewhere else, just remember to boot using the original harddrive in the new computer, not the potentially broken one.

poop, so by the sounds of it she will probably need to get a new system entirely, since i cant really go to Canada xP
