Maintenance 08/31/2011

We really do hate to break it to you all but the maintenance had absolutely NOTHING to do with connections and pings.
Maintenance last night = database backup and a change in the lineup of maps for the daily missions for September (which requires a server restart). -
Because the Internet isn't a constant.OK.. Saidin, and why our pings so high?
Routes fluctuates, meaning your ping does too.
When connecting from a not-well-developed Internet nation like Brazil, having to go through a bunch of routers will of course mess with your ping. (as it will for everyone mind you)
Sometimes it will be good since Internet is pretty auto-correcting. Meaning it will be stable and not too high.
Sometimes it will be bad if a router goes down somewhere along the way from you to Miami. Meaning it will be spiking and high.
Sorry, thats the nature of the Internet. Act accordingly. -
Why is that? Do you have T1? Have you specifically designated server routes? Or are you running off of your own data-efficiency server that was designed to handle your traffic with Crossfire? Its not my end that is causing my ping to go to 35 -
Internet Speed is actually generally based more on perception than actual raw data anyways.
35, or 120, or 78 are just numbers. They are numbers in the same sense that they could be little bars with colours in green and yellow and red.
Just like your computer processor which fluctuates on a 'by second' basis, your internet speed is fluctuating just as much.
Whether you are downloading the latest tune from itunes or connecting to a free to play game like Cross Fire, or even playing on a WoW server with millions of other people. Your internet speed is constantly fluctuating.
While the refresh rate of 'ping times' in Cross Fire may not be as fast as you would like, as in perhaps the displayed time is not as accurate as you are lead to believe, the ping time really comes in sections. If your ping goes from 35-60 you are likely still in the "green".
So if we had little dots.. Say 3 dots, 1 green, 2 yellow and 3 red to indicate ping instead of numbers you would still be "green". And therefore you wouldn't have seen a notice, because the green dot hadn't changed.
Or perhaps you joined a really busy server at the same time that everyone else did and your ping went to 2 yellow. You would come here to complain, even though in "real-time" your ping is probably still 1 green. The game just hasn't refreshed it fast enough.
There are about a million factors that can influence the path a piece of data takes from one spot on the internet to another. This is exactly the reason why the internet is not consistent. Yes, the front lines in this case are your connection type, your computer speed (power) and our servers. But there are a ton of other things in between that affect your ping.
Our suggestion here would be to focus less on the number on the tab screen and more in your perception. Imagine that number not existing. And see how you feel when your ping is 35 as opposed to 60 when you actually play the game. My guess is you won't notice any difference, since there likely is none between those two numbers.
When your perception changes to that of "oh wow I'm lagging". Then you can go look at your connection, come here see if there is anything being done, look at the traffic within the game.. etc etc.
