PC Help *cough*Tasty*cough*

Hey guys, My dad's friend has recently gifted him a Thinkpad T420 4180-AE5, and he said he would give to me if I want it, however I am not sure of its performance, and I have also heard about the rumours about it not being able to have game sound while gaming. So what do you guys think of it?

  • Looking at the specs:

    - Intel i5 2401M Dual-core 2.3GHz (turbo Cores to 2.9GHz..when 1 core is used) 3MB of cache, 35W TDP
    - 3GB 1333MHz RAM (2GB + 1GB sticks?)
    - 500GB SATA 7200RPM HDD
    - NVidia Quadro NVS 4200M Graphics card, 1GB of RAM, 64-bit memory interface, 48 CUDA cores
    - 14.1" display, 16:9 1366x768 resolution
    - Windows 7 Professional (32-bit I assume..with the 3GB of RAM)

This computer is a low energy workstation setup. The nVidia Quadro series cards are NOT your average GeForce series gaming cards that you can buy in stores. They are mainly for office programs, graphics design/rendering, etc. Workstation cards & gaming cards a completely different because they are programed differently for their jobs & use different architectures.

From the raw specs of the GPU, 64-bit Memory interface, 48 CUDA Cores...not gonna be a very good gaming card at all.

The cost of this laptop is about ¥10,000 which is equivalent to $1,553 USD or $1,467 Canadian. Pretty expensive laptop if you ask me.

You should to able to run games on Medium or possibly High due to the 3GB of RAM and the Quadro graphics card...that's not made to render games.

Don't get me wrong; you should run games like Crossfire, Counterstrike, Doom3, Sims etc...fine, but expect to run modern games like Starcraft 2, Crysis 2, upcoming BF3 on Medium or Low settings.
