Offensive subject matter
A recent thread had me thinking about this and I wanted to know why having a system to censor language is justified. I don't think it is and here's why:
1. So called "bad words" are sometimes used to offend other players, but if you take these words out one could still substitute another word to offend to the same degree.
2. Everyone is offended at something. It's hardwired into our psychology as a type of defense mechanism. But are these "curse words" inherently offensive? No of course not, context is everything when dealing with language. An example of this would be someone using a "curse" word as a sort of endearment.
3. It interferes with regular dialogue in the game to the point where it feels intrusive.
4. In a game where you're blowing up people, shooting them in their heads, etc... I doubt that a few "bad" words could effect someone who already volunteered to watch virtual war
5. I think it should be up to the parents to decide and not the company who makes the game whether or not kids should play their game, because regardless they are going to see the words whether they are censored or not.
I hope that people will try to reply to my points in a civil and coherent manner inorder for everyone to gain a better understanding of the subject.

Well why should there be any censor?
actually rethinking that. there shouldnt be. kids shouldnt be shielded from a cruel world, better they learn that its tough now then having grown up their entire life thinking everyone in the world is nice. these words are part of the english language and as such should be allowed to be used. and honestly if u get offended by someone with 300 ping swearing at you....this really isnt the game for you.
but every game has a swear filter so i guess theres probably a legal reason behind it :P -

Nobody would not play this game just because there isnt a censorship.
Parental issues: If the parents are too uptight to let the kid play a game with swears, they wouldnt let their kid play a shooting game in the first place.
Problems with it: makes community dialect hard, dumbs us down. we need to use abbreviations and shortened words, it makes our dialog very stupid. i recommend make the in-game censorship the same as the forum censorship, only blocking out swears. -

Censorship sounds like a great deal. -

I agree with you on everything, but the parents not letting kids play violent games. For some reason many parents think that violence is less of a threat to their kid's mind that swearing. -

From the nature of the post it seems that you would be advocating removing swear words from the filters all together (probably mostly because of how they can interfere with regular words).
And putting the onus on parents or the intellect of public society to police themselves.
Sorry I'm going to edit here and say that I agree with this #5 point. In general parents should be more prudent in controlling the content their kids are able to view.
Unfortunately this isn't the case.
We're dealing with multiple factors here:
A) Interaction isn't rated by the ESRB, however it's our duty to help eliminate this kind of thing to the best of the abilities of the system.
The system does not have a button that can turn on or off the swear filter. As such we have to add words that are particularly offensive as of point A.
C) The system unfortunately is implemented such that any part of a bad-word that has been deemed inappropriate gets censored. Even if its a part of another word or in a completely different context
D) As shown many times, it's actually impossible to fully trust the online world. It generally tends to move towards disruptive and chaotic environment.
E) Some bad words are just bad. Whether or not you're mature enough to not use them, or recognize their offensive nature. There really is never a reason to be saying them in a video game. (additionally, see religion)
At this point I could probably go on. For those who don't like censorship, then they can grab a milk-crate head down to their local speakeasy, stand up on it and speak their peace. If they are in America, and are not disturbing the private property, ownership or patrons of the local area then they are generally protected under the freedom of speech act.
However since technically the game environment is private property, and based on the restrictions and limitations of the system, and based on our policy and our feelings as the hosts and operators of said environment, you'll have to deal with the system as it is.
Improvements can be made, but the swear filter in-game is always going to censor a certain number of words. -

erm this could be a misunderstanding but are you guys trying to keep interaction to a bare minimum? -

We use words to express our emotion and the use of a censor is degrading or down grading our historical language.
I would like to add this as Saidan has struck a Truth. Everyday language and the way we express ourselves is not able to translate as well onto our screens. In a way I support the censorship because it makes the writer think of other ways to express their opinion. Face to face we can not only use our wording to put across a point, we have our body language and facial expressions etc. So it really is a double-edged sword.
I would like to share my Clans defensive strats...As opposed to the offensive:)

apart from that I think your all SLAGS! -

Just as an FYI on some of those things. sometimes fk is cut because of some sort of spamsite or scamsite that has .fk or fk- or some sort of fk type thing in it.
While I understand your frustration (specifically about the afk one), imagine when we get flooded with hundreds of thousands of people who fall for the website www.fkzpforfree.fk and then we can't do our job answering other peoples requests, or reviewing hack reports etc etc etc.
It sounds slightly "excuse-ish" but its the best solution with the system we have at the moment. -

it just seems like an improper tradeoff to me. IMO, if they are stupid enough to follow links, then they deserve to get scammed. call it a social darwinistic outlook, but it is logical. (at least to me) -

Even though i think censorship shouldn't be there at all, I would be willing to accept this compromise because i do understand that this is private property and the people who developed this have their own subjective reasons for not wanting blatant swearing in their product. -

I wonder why man made language.[GM]Saidin wrote: »

Who cares about trust of the online community? It serves no benefits.
On another note, what is a "bad" word? This is what baffles me. I understand why religious words MIGHT be censored but other words?
Also, if theyre isnt a system to toggle it, why dont you make one?[GM]Saidin wrote: »At this point I could probably go on. Its not the host's responsibility for those "hundreds of thousands" of people that fall for it and if they do fall for it, its their fault.Great thread mate, I agree too. The game censor should be the same as the forum's censor.
No no, you cant trust the online community guys!!!
Then again, I shouldnt complain. Im pretty grateful this game exists anyway.
