Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
That's what they originally teached because we didn't use it much in 2nd grade, but over the years they shortened it to :
Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Adding and Subtraction ( Doesn't matter which comes first for Multiplication and Division: and Adding and Subtracting ) -

Amazing how grade 3 teachers hammer these things into your head...What's pemdas?GringoLixo wrote: »Parentheses

BEDMAS is the canadian version.
Pemdas is the NA version.
What you guys call brackets we call parenthesis. And it doesn't matter if divsion/multiplication goes first. So that order doesn't matter. -
Same goes for Addition and Subtraction.BEDMAS is the canadian version.

Guys, guys;
http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=6%2F2%281%2B2%29
What is outside the brackets gets priority when multiplying, as it's not 6 over everything, which would be shown with brackets.
It's nine. The only way it can be 1 is IF 6/(2(1+2)) (6 is over everything)
This isn't the case, so....
btw, well call it BIDMAS (Brackets, indices, division, multiplying, + and -)
Yes, i'm UK. -

the answer to life, universe and everything?
42!
Only when you know the Answer will you know the question!
The mice thought the question was "how many roads must someone take to become a man?"
But the real one is " what makes 9*6 ?".
If you don't know how 9*6=42 wait till you're old enough to change numbers bases -
6/2(2+1)=? 1 or 9?
obviously 9... 6/2(1+2) => 6*1/2*(1+2) => 6*1/2*(3) => 3*3 = 9
go back to school...
for people that still think its 1, here is a good read
The bar ranks with parentheses, ÷ is interchangeable with *. therefore the problem must be solved as 6÷2(1+2) NOT 6 (over) 2(1+2) we do the parentheses first, so 6÷2(3), the parentheses are now no longer relevant, because the number inside is in it's simplest form. Every single number has implied parentheses around it.
6÷2(3)
(6) ÷(2)(3)
6÷2*3,
or even converting the division to multiplication by a reciprocal (a legal math move)
(6)(1 (over) 2)(3)
are all correct ways to write this problem and mean exactly the same thing. Using pemdas, where md and as are interchangeable, we work from left to right, so (3)(3) or
3*3= 9
ewww more learning im not interested

something ive learned that most of the time it has like 6/2(1+2) you can remove the /2 or /anything
and youre new math is 1+2+6 is 9 ^^ -
The PEMDAS Rule: (That's how I learned it)
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Substraction
Ha, someone learned what I learned6/2(1+2) = 6/2³ = 6/6 = 1
Equations inside the parentheses get calculated first, then the exponent, and finally the division.

I honestly don't get your thinking.
Even if it was 6/2³, it'd still get solved from left to right.
Thus, being 3³, equaling 9.
This seems like pretty basic math... but since apparently you're a teacher... -
MisterMunzta wrote: »Since there is no "*" sign between the 3 and the parentheses, then it should be considered as 1 element
Btw, guessing by "*", you mean a multiplication sign, then here you go :
If there is a number by itself next to parentheses, then it's multiplication.
Honestly, HOW can you guys not know this... -

If the multiplication sign isn't shown, then the expression can be considered as ONE number. Just write it in fraction form.
I don't wanna see someone who can't multiply matrices troll -
Well, since mathematic equations aren't my strongest feature, this teach had to grab her books as well. It seems I made a huge error in my former posts. Em0tioN was right after all, about it being 9.

I still believe it can't be settled with computer characters
And DUKE was right, it is 42
