Is my computer that bad?
I don't know what to do, my laptop takes a good 4-5 minutes to load up Cross Fire. Once I'm logged into the server the first game I join takes about 3-4 minutes to actually get into the game. After a match the scoreboard doesn't show up until about 30 seconds after the game is finished. And I never make second halves in scrims unless I'm host. Is there anything I can do to make it go a little faster?
Maybe some useful info:
RAM:1GB
Processor: Intel Core2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz 1.83GHz
Is it time to just buy a new PC?

Well considering I'm a youngin' and got messed up in school first semester, my dad probably isn't going to let my build a solid computer, I might be getting a new laptop for my birthday but its going to be a dell because my dad gets deals with them since he's been buying them for 10 years. -
TASTELIMES wrote: »All it involves is planning out what parts you need for your specific needs and ordering them off newegg.com
The building part you could do with your dad probably, or if you need any help take it to your local computerstore. How much are you looking to spend? You'll be fine with anything over $600 just to let you know.
Building cost a ton cheaper, and the performance is greater.
Who are you and what have you done to the old tasty... actualy, scratch that, I like the new one. -
TASTELIMES wrote: »Yes, knowing what works with what is the problem for many. That's why I offered to help with that, and you can even learn for future reference along the way.
I know it'd be rude to ask him for something else for your birthday, but imply to him sometime at dinner time that you've learned that building a computer is beneficial cost wise and performance wise, and you can get a LOT more building a computer with the money that would be spent on buying a laptop.
I've tried telling him this before, and he knows exactly where I'm going with it. (he hates gaming cause of my grades) Even though I'm doing pretty well now he's still dubious about the whole thing. -
This is pretty much the only FPS I play, I'm looking into Portal because of the PS3/Steam deal but PS3 is down right now so that can wait. Counter Strike is once in a blue moon because I'm not very good at it.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't need a high end PC, just a little more decent than the rest. -
TASTELIMES wrote: »Who needs high end PC's? I built my PC for $600 and it's out performing my friends pre built $800 gaming computer.
This ^
Most any custom built rig will come out cheaper, run faster, and look nicer.
One example, my build:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad CPU Q9400 4.9GHz
RAM: 4096MB Corsair XMS3 1800MHZ
HDD: Corsair Force 250GB SSD
GPU: XFX 260 GTX 2GB
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer
Mobo: ABit IP35-Pro (modded DDR3)
Case: Antec 900 6-Fan Blue
Total cost: £220/$380
My friend's Alienware:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad X6800 2.93GHz
RAM: Random 2GB DDR2 SDRAM
HDD: 250GB S-ATA2
GPU: NVidia GeForce 7900GTX SLI 512MB
Sound Card: Integrated
Mobo: NVidia nForce4
Case: Some ugly ass Alienware case
Total cost: near to £900 at time of purchase.
Just show your dad what kind of build you could do for the price, try NewEgg or TigerDirect if you're Canadian. -
TASTELIMES wrote: »I think you documented that price wrong. A GTX 260 and a Q9400 is already over $350, and an SSD? You absolutely did not pay $380 for that, unless you got everything 75% off.
taste quick question, i7(2010 one) or core duo extreme?
not for gaming, more of a multimidia desktop, gotta be cheap but gotta have a lot of power (video and music editing coming
) -

I put ALOT of hours and days into looking around for these parts, as I was on a very strict budget for myself. Got lucky on the SSD though as the guy had no idea what he was selling me. I'm guessing he figured since it's only 250GB it must be worthless in comparison to today's 1TBs  pretty useless considering he runs a computer component store.
That Q9400 clocks at 2.66GHz standard, but that's well OC'd @4.9GHz. That's 'used' from a different project of mine. I only have an Arctic Cooling in there at the moment, more than likely going to switch to liquid some time soon.
The case came free off my uncle, but it's practically brand new since the interior was too big for his liking, and in fairness, I can't even put this thing on my glass desk for fear of it shattering.
The XFX 260 GTX really isn't worth that much these days, got mine for £35.
To be honest, it's not like I could just build another of this sort of rig on the same budget without charging hella commission on top, and putting in even more hours than last time. -
TASTELIMES wrote: »I'd go with the dual core e5800
But I think an AMD build would be much better and less expensive
oh well, i guess i could re-do the build, i have the money to expend, but the cheaper the better if it keeps the same performance, would you mind in building to me a 900$ max desktop with at least 6gb of ram and 2gb of video?
-
TASTELIMES wrote: »Sure thing. Why the 2GB of video ram tho? There's really no point to 2GB of video ram, it's practically no different than 512MB-1GB of video ram in today's applications.
going to do some little things here, and i'd prefer to be prepared for future releases (they've already shown the new Unreal engine, so, no doubt that they'll launch games with a way higher video card necessity) but, do you think that if i change the 2gb for a 1gb only i can get 2 extra gb's of ram? (i'd like to be able to work using multiple programs :x) -
TASTELIMES wrote: »Alright, I took the fact you're focused greatly on multimedia when gathering the parts. I think an AMD 6 core would benefit you greatly, as would the 8GB of ram. For the graphic card, I picked the HD6850 1GB because it's at a perfect price point for performance, and the card is really good and will definitely be sufficient for what you need. A quality Seasonic 620 watt supply, and an am3 Asus motherboard. All this will be inside an Antec 100 case.

Comes down to about $850. I can rebuild it if you want the operating system and monitor.
already got the monitor, my grandpa is going to give me a 30 something monitor, huge as hell O-O
i would like to have the OS :x but i can use up to 1100 us$ to get extra things like monitors, keyboards, mouses and such, so no need to rebuild it ^^
thanks for the tips taste, karma up foh ya ;3
