Try aiming, then firing. You'll know whether you hit or not, regardless of if you can see a hit indicator.
It probably doesn't help much, but it does to me. For example, with crosshairs, they turn red if you get a hit. I use those hit indicators to predict how many more shots I need to hit them to kill them. -
