Hard to say if it is the father, but cs1.5 might be the most popular at the time, it set up the title of most played fps in the world for this mod, and many of us even don't know half life.

But 4 years early, it is full of hackers. It don't have any build-in anti-hack system. Hackers farms legit players even without trying to hide their hacking, because the third party anti-hack is so easy to by passed.

And more ugly, there is lots of host tools to made it unfair. I was once kicked (not kick out of room, it is exactly the character being kicked in ass and losing hp) when I guarded one door and had to do something like camping because the side I am the only one left on my team, and the enemy already took site A. I killed 3 and stopped them from charging me, but one guy with host privilege think it is unfair to be killed by me, he start to kick me off from the slope. He really managed to did that, but that makes me think the game should be replaced sooner or later.
