Okay, so my dad's computer has the router that I connect to from my computer. I'm pretty sure theres a modem, but I'm not sure where it is. Anyways, I was wondering if I could buy a router and hook it up wired to my computer and still connect to the internet.
My dad has a dlink router and he can turn off/on internet from his computer.
So do you guys think I can get a wired connection from my computer to like the modem?

p.s. my computer upstairs his computer/router downstairs

No, my uncle did this also.

You can just change your IP address though.

Just change make it like if yours is 192.168.1.105 make it 192.168.1.106

Works for me, he still hasn't found out.

That is your network IP address, not your global one. 192.168.*.* is reserved for local addresses. Changing it still can be useful for some stuff.

Edit: I actually read your post. In an ideal world, you probably want both computers connected to the router and the router connected to the modem. Most routers are wireless these days and wireless network cards that will do the job are not that expensive. So, you don't really need to access the modem, just the router.
