from AMDs 5770 to 6970 ?
calling the experts here. i am not much into technical stuff. i basically just buy things.
so back to the topic
happy with the 5770 but i plan on giving it to a pal who fried his GPU few days ago. so i wondered if it makes sense anyways.
roughly my specs are.
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor 64bit win 7 8GB RAM

What PSU do you have?
Also, what resolutions do you gayme on? -
The 6970 draws a lot of power, and generates a large amount of heat because of it.
if you could show us your case/psu, or if it's a prebuilt computer give us a model number, it would help a lot.
You could always get a second 5770, they are cheap these days, and you can get some that come pre-oced.
Edit: the 6970 can run off a 550 watts, but only if most of that wattage is converted to a large amount of ampage on the 12v rail. -

ok. i ll make a pic of the case and psu. it is not exactly a typical prebuilt that comes with model number. they built it at a shop for my friend who gave it to me. he was able to customize it back then. i wouldn t mind to buy a new PSU to be on the safe side.

I'm going to go ahead and say your friend got ripped off if he paid over 600 for that pc.

Just a personal recommendation.
I would stick another 5770 in, and upgrade the processor to a Phenom II dual or quad core.
Chances are with that Athlon II the 6970 would be bottlenecked. (unable to perform as well as it should) -

If you give that 5770 to a buddy and put another 5770 in I would keep that CPU.
That motherboard doesn't support two GPU's at the same time, so there is no point in mentioning that.
If you put in a 6970 I would however upgrade the CPU. -

k thx for the help man! i ll keep using that for some more time i think. i am not exactly unhappy with it. for the stuff i play its well enough. -

On a side note, as long as your friend isn't playing crysis, tiger direct is selling a Geforce 9500 GT for 30 bucks.
He may want to go pick that up or something -

good point. he thinks after 1.6 the shooter genre slowly passed away..so the 5770 is not necessary anyways! cheers im gonna take a sip.
