Will we be getting the ability to use signatures anytime soon?

  • We have in the past said that forum signatures are something we still want to bring in. But in order to do so we have to get passed a few social and technical hurdles.

The social ones being control. We can't open a function on these boards unless we have complete control over them. The community is too immature on a whole to expect to use a function rationally. And yes, this goes for a case of one person does wrong and it punishes the community.

The second issue is technical. We have a merged game/clan/forum database. The login, for example is the same for the site and the forums. This in the past has caused us technical issues that we need to solve. So it's not as easy as just turning something on or off, as it might be if the forum was run independently from the site.

Edit: Features also includes groups, calendars, announcements etc. We're only taking advantage of a very small portion of the features vb offers. It's something we would like to change.

I can say that we are working on a few things, in the past I have hinted that some forum features may be enabled especially via things like ribbons. Some things we can do. Some things we can't. We're not ready to just throw all the information down on whats happening just yet. We expect to see improvements all over our website and forums in 2011. I know that this has been said before and is hard to take, but try to have a little patience.

What about the GROUPS?. Just put on a couple of groups for the ones that are important.
  • I don't like how the majority has to suffer because of the minority here...

If 10k people have signatures, and least 50% of them are going to have something stupid in them, then can't the MODs just take the time to slowly remove the privilege? And I'm sure allowing users to report them WOULD net the removal of said privileges, seeing as it would take alot less time to review then say a game replay (and I'd LOVE to be a GM just or that...I've got PLENTY of time on my hands to review those is Z8 was hiring for it...*nudge nudge*).

We can compare this forum to forums elsewhere with a whole gaggle load more immature people (Gaia online...where there are WAY more users under the age of 16 then here, Maplestory's forums, Newgrounds.com...the list goes on...)that have their problem groups, but they allow signatures and they moderate them HEAVILY and with EASE with the small amount of staff THEY have...so staff limitations it just an excuse.

Either way, how about getting those web-dev people Z8 has hired to whip up a script that disallows a person the right to a signature UNTIL it has been approved by a MOD, and every time they try to change it, it RE-DISALLOWS the ability to have one it until it is re-approved (to stop stupid kids from posting something clean so they can post junk later)!!! <----COUNTER THAT.

Nothing against groups, but this will just lead us to more Database Errors.
  • I don't like how the majority has to suffer because of the minority here...

The majority are immature. It's the minority that has to suffer. You're telling me the majority of people in this forum community are mature? Please enlighten me. We deal with the majority every day and it is the majority who is immature, not the other way around.

As to your comment on MODs removing privileges, we do have lives too. How can we guarantee that ALL signatures will be kept appropriate ALL the time? This is a volunteer position. Take that into account. We can not spend all of our time moderating inappropriate signatures all day, we will then fall behind on moderating posts and threads. This community WILL abuse it, that's just how the majority is. Sorry, but it's the truth. Until the majority can prove otherwise, I don't see why you should be allowed.
  • I can think of plenty of people that are above 500 posts that aren't even close to being deserving of signature rights. We don't treat people like children, hence the straightforward answer. More than half this community ARE children, hence why they act like it, not because of us. It's not our fault that people can't follow rules. Act like adults and we will treat you like adults. I do agree there are some mature people in this community, but they are far and few between. Show them that the majority can act like an adult and then maybe they will treat you as such.
So in a way Mature people are treated on the same level as immature ones ?
don`t you think that it would be something good to give that IMG SIG .to those mature ones and let the Immature ones get it as an example of " Change your behavior and you will get it "?
See the impact of the Honorable soldiers RIBBON." I did a thread about that " I am sure that many regret not to have it and would like to erase their fault to have it .
You want to change the community then you need to do something that will push them to behave well. It`s not the rules that will make them chance . It`s what they want to have and can`t have that will give them the will of such a good behavior .
The good guy " woaw look at my nice sig." :D
The bad one " How is it that you have it and not me ?"
The good one " Behave like me and you will get XD " :p
The bad one " And how do you behave ? "
The good one " HAVE RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND RESPECT THE RULES OF CONDUCT ON A PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL FORUM " ;)
    The bad one " Ok I will give a try " :o
As all bad loser do in general , they will want to obtain that sig at all price .:)
  • What about unique embedding codes? Only allowing specific ways to create a signature? A perfect example would by my profile sig below:

    http://www.crossfire-germany.eu/API/sign.php?usn=5983720&h=6e00e04927e99575f0961b1dca4855b0

But of course instead of that terrible html that would break alot of things for MOD's and their work, why not create a tag that would only recognize lets say, their Z8 #? For example:

    [z8]5983720[/z8]

Would produce an image based on probably a sig generator much like the one I used to display mine. The benefit of this is that only the number will work. Adding lets say a url to it will obviously cause it to fail since in reality the [z8] tag would be equal to:

    http://www.crossfire-germany.eu/API/sign.php?usn=

In that regard, just adding the number to such. This will probably be the most effective way of adding sigs, in a controlled fashion and without the worry of things being a problem. I know many boards are capable of such feats.

We all know that more than the half of this community is under 14, including me.

No' just no. Maybe teens but not under 14.

I don't really see the point of pics in signatures. I find it kinda handy that Mods do have it though. When I'm on my mobile, as right now and most of the time, if I want to know if a MOD has reploed,I just search for sigs...

And eve' if we had it... What would we do of it. Personnally, if not against the rules I would just add stuff about the company my avatar represents. Obviously without writting the companies name, since MOD told me THAT was against the rules.

FYI I'm a 16 years old boy. Maybe me or somebody else should make a thread about people's ages... Just an idea...

This thread. has been here for a while & we were promised for the ability to use a custom sig would return.

So when will we get this again like seriously?

And you wonder when we will get to use sigs?

This thread also proves that the community isn't mature enough to get such a privilege (Making yet another thread about it won't help the cause)

Hmm, what are the req's for becoming a web master with z8?

Serious question is serious. No sarcasm.
  • WHAT IS THE PROBLEM NOW?

srsly? if people with 500 post just get the right to put something in there signature and if the break the rules by using naked image(sig's) or anything insulting JUST BAN THEM THATS ALL OMG!

srsly what is the problem now? you can ban people right? so do it... if the break the rules

YES 1000000000000000% ON THESE FORUM IS IMMATURE WE KNOW THAT...
So giving people with 500 post the rights to put a image(sig) in there signature a beginning and if anybody breaks the rules just infract them and remove there rights for putting a sig in there in signature OR EVEN BETTER JUST BAN THEM SRSLY?

COME ON WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

You can ban you can use it, so do it if someone breaks the rules!

And yes coding the forum and keeping it working is a allot of work but I guess you people got some experts there right? or are you just following tuts the whole time? lolz....

    Srsly I don't see a problem
I don't even need a sig but just looking at the excuse you peeps use is just stupid

If anybody breaks the rules JUST USE THE ban_hammer.jpg

AAAAAA come on is it really because the forum is immature or are there no coders or are people not getting paid enough?

Come on Mods or GM YOU got a ban hammer so use it....if rules are broken
  • ......

I hope you arent the speaker of the community because you make us all look immature.
  • I rest my case. Lol.

Ah but the key thing here is he doesn't have 500 posts. XD
  • Rabbz wrote: »

You took the words right out of my mouth.
  • The immaturity is only part of the issue.

These forums are for our games. Frankly we don't have to put signature images in at all. We've said that before, we don't have to say it again. We've also said that its a feature that we would like to bring out, but have never guaranteed that it will happen.

Now for the other issues. Just whipping out a ban hammer, no matter how big it is is not the answer. Our moderators do an excellent job at helping keep the community as stable as possible. But the way you describe forum signatures is exactly part of the reason that's getting in the way. It's a make-work project for a staff that already has enough work on their hands. Moderators included.

The community has proven it has a hard time policing itself. So our moderators are there to guide those hands. That doesn't just mean, ok. Lets take a few thousand people and all of a sudden have a moderator OK 1000's of signatures.

Think about all the irony that goes on here.

500 people create a forum name that somehow all looks very strangely similar. This becomes a problem for dealing with people and in general doesn't promote the growth of the community from an outsider perspective. So we limit name changes to once per month. Everyone gets all upset.

If we added signatures and had to spend weeks approving every new signature at the start, then we would have to limit your signatures to a change that we could handle through the approval process. Then you would all get ticked off that you can't change your signature. Blah Blah, etc etc.

It's clear the community just WANTS something, and they have absolutely no idea what it takes to actually make that happen. From beyond a "turn this feature on" perspective.

We have to cater to the lowest common denominator here because we can't afford to have profanity and trolling and hate and sexual innuendo all over every feature of these boards because its a family site. Now multiply that over thousands of game accounts and you'll see that turning a feature on requires a LOT of preparation and work.

We are a gaming company, we want to have fun, do good things for you guys. Publish a cool game, bring you content when we can, have a functioning website and community etc etc. But we still have a team of people here who WORK, and they work HARD. And adding more work without a goal in this case can stand in the way of simply adding a forum feature you want.

Lol you would say that. I would be for a signature that posted In-game stats and such, kind of like your character profile. But at this point, I wouldn't trust some users over 1,000 posts with unmoderated signature privileges. We have problems with people and their avatars now. People don't think signatures would be a problem? Haha think again.

There's not any group that important enough to get the feature.

This thread and a lot of the posts in it are proof that the community isn't going to get signatures any time soon. For the guys claiming to be "mature", if you really were you'd just accept the fact instead of whining about it. The 500 post thing wouldn't work and just add more problem. We've already got a bunch of immature post-farmers as it is, and people would do it even more now to reach 500 for the ohsogreat(but really not) signature. Nobody's suffering from the lack of images in signatures. Let me know when you have to be rushed to the hospital because we don't have image sigs.

This would be an awesome idea. Being able to unlock an ingame stats signature (wouldn't be editable by anyone other than turn it on or off). But not sure if the servers currently in place could handle yet another thing accessing the stats, when there seems to be multiple database errors every weekend.
  • who gives a f about sigs anyway?? Do watever you want z8.

Lol funny you should say that because i was thinking about a leaf but im like I will be the good guy here and just go with fuzzy tiger bunny.

Also just because you have certain drugs in your avatar that doesnt make you immature. Just goes against the rules.
