What diff will more RAM make.
I am really getting infuriated with my PC because its performance is real bad.
Firstly i am having great difficulty finding a compatible RAM i only have 512mb RAM but problem is that its a DDR PC2-5200 i have been to all shops bought two different ram cards neither worked.I have been told that it was one of the first ddr2 chips and i must go to a specialist shop to find one.
Secondly my graphics card is ATI Radeon Express 200series.Which i guess is also not suited to gaming.
I have intel(r) pentium(r) D CPU 2.66ghz processor.
I run crossfire on lowest graphics setting and have no other programmes running.my problem is when more than 6 players my fps goes down to around 18/25 fps or lower and spikes constantly.
Maybe sounds a silly question but what additional purchases will make the biggest difference. For example when only 4 people playing and i get 45 fps i can play pretty well as game runs smoothly. But when lots of players its real difficult to play and mostly end up with negative or slightly positive k/d.
I am not really a tech expert but i think my cpu processors are adequate.
I am on a tight budget but if say i have 100euro maximum to spend what would you recommend? I dont need a state of art game computer as basically crossfire is only game i really play.So with that in mind could someone please give me some guidance and tell me if it will really make big difference for my k/d.
Also this problem about finding a compatible ram for my computer.Does anyone know anything about ddr pc2 5200?
I should also add that i have a 10euro saitek mouse and a really old crappy keyboard. So how do i pimp my computer on a budget?
thanks in advance

If your Video is 128mbs or better i think the ram would make the most differance. Another 512 should give you enough to get at least 30 or better. Also if you havent already go into your ATI settings and turn them down (directx settings). To get there in WinXP Right click the desktop and click Properties. Then the settings tab and Advanced on the bottom.

Sorry for being a bit dum in this.I have windows xp but am finding it difficult finding the settings on desktop. Not exactly sure what you mean about the directx settings.
Do you mean computer right click settings? -
not in today's standards.
Please bear in mind i don't play any other games only command and conquer occasionally.
I am an older player and don't really need state of the art computer.I just need computer that enables me to play crossfire. The only other thing i use it for is watching films, streams etc.
For which my computer is perfectly adequate at moment.Maybe in the future will look into buying a better computer but at moment as i said before am pretty strapped for cash.

You cant run any modern games with 1gb of RAM. Guaranteed... You might get away with running [enter 1999 FPS game here] at 30ish FPS
RAM stores the data needed to be processed and sends it to the processor when its ready to be processed. If it can only store 1gb, it will have to wait until RAM gets freed up before holding more data...
This dramatically slows down performance and if your using a chipset as your only form of processing graphics, then that will make things worse since it shares the RAM...
As with my case which is why I cant run CF properly with 1gb RAM and some crappy intel chipset -

I managed to get into the advanced section Then it shows at top general/adapter/monitor/troubleshoot/color management.
I am not sure here what i can change e.g screen refresh rate or hardware acceleration etc.Or maybe its all turned down as low as it can be.
My ATI Radeon xpress 200 series card is 128mb leaving me with 384mb spare
Just on subject of processors is this a reasonable cpu for crossfire?
# CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.66GHz Model 4, Stepping 7
# CPU Speed: 2660 MHz -

Thanks for info. Not really clued up about chipset(is that meaning a graphics chip without its own memory so it eats up ram).
Whay would you recommend purchasing to make biggest difference? -

Do you have a standalone graphics card? if not then you are using the onboard chipset -

Ok it looks like yours may not have the advanced options but there is still hope. You can try this
http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=733&file=4&evp=7146bfba1282862ee2402cc1f8d2f7f9
Its called ATI tray tools. after you download and install it should look kinda like this:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
And my D3d options look like this:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
But 1 thing i will say is that if you make the Texture LOD adjustment a positive number all the walls in CF look really bad but it runs good FPS so works for me

Computer was a gift to me from a mate.
On front of pc it has badge which says nvidia. But under device manager it shows i have this radeon 200 so i guess its a standalone.
Are all graphics cards compatible with my pc?
If i get say 2gb ram and a better graphic card(maybe someone has an idea of one that my suits my needs). It should be ok for crossfire or?
One things for sure i am getting sick of when someone for example throws a flash grenade my computer just freezes up.When that happens i can't even shoot. So surely if i can somehow upgrade this computer i won't get Pwned so much...Hopefully,or maybe i am just a bad player. -

Ouch.Back online again.
That ATI Tray program crashed my computer instantly.Everytime restarted kept on crashing so started in safemode and uninstalled it.Were lots of confusing options during installation but i didnt check any boxes.
Anyway would it be possible to change ati directx settings through their official ATI driver program?
quote Giggletron
"Check that you have a PCI-e expansion slot on the motherboard before you go buying a new graphics card"
Yeah, thanks will try to find a specialist shop that i can just take computer there and ask whats possible with the old beast
Go patriots

Whats your problem i am asking for advice which i received and am grateful and if you have nothing constructive to say then just ignore this thread. We haven't all got rich parents that buy us computers.I don't need to lower myself to even bother trolling you. -
OK it kinda sounds like either your card or just the driver isn't compatible with ATT. About your video setting , First you have to find out the Driver version your using and the exact model of card. To find the exact card Click the start menu then Run, put in dxdiag. after it loads up go to Display and there is the name of your card. Then go to http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and put in what ur card says it is. Then Right Click My Computer on your desktop or in the start menu and go to Properties. Then the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Go to Display adapters and double click it. Then go to the Driver tab and look at the version number and compare it to the one you have. It sounds like you have the Windows driver instead of the ATI one, it works but wont give you the advanced options.

Am installing net framework now so the catalyst control center can work.As i had old windows xp disk recently reinstalled so must update everything.the original ati driver in the device manager was from 2008
So ya now if you follow the directions to get to the adv. options it should show them now

I run CoD, BDBC, etc fine with 1GB DRR2 1033mhz in my laptop.
Processor takes up most of the power for this particular game, but still, 50 fps in 8v8 ain't too bad.
The only option, if you don't want to build yourself a new rig is:
If your motherboard isn't compatible with DDR3, likeliness being that it isn't, then buy a 2GB DRR2 kit which polls at at least 1033mhz, otherwise you're just wasting your money.
Or you could go for gaming grade 1GB 1600mhz DDR RAM. Kingston are a decent supplier, Corsair could set you back a little more.
You should still run GameBooster with that though, if you already are. -

Really thanks alot.Appreciate time you have given.I have finally got control center up.
What options exactly must i change to optimise my computer.I have been in the 3d section and customised everything to performance example refresh rate.Is there any other things to change that will make a difference.
i am looking forward to trying all this to see if my fps is improved.
