[Intelligent Discussions] Empathy
Hello, some of you may know me, some of you may not. It’s not that it really matters though. In response to the, “lack of activity” from me, I have decided to come back start making these intelligent threads just as many have done before. You may say, I am doing my own series of threads that promote intelligent discussions and hard thinking. I’ve been wanting to do this ever since our very own [MOD] Polleus has done. These threads won’t be a daily implementation, but I will have some threads.
Just to clarify, if you guys think that I am “copying” Polleus, or that I am trying “way too hard to be a mod” (some critique that I have received from many forumers after posting my threads) you guys really should look at the big picture. I am making these threads in order to help the forums become a regular gaming forum, to an intelligent, nurturing, and promoting community or even a family. If you do not share these same ideas, but instead want to think in a negative manner, just don’t read this. Post a “cool story bro” or a “tl;dr” and show your lack of intelligence. Just remember, I called this before anything actually happened.
This is a series of threads. These threads are really not “informative threads”, I prefer to call them “discussion threads”. If you don’t know proper English (which pertains to proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation), there are many websites that can help. I also know, from my past experience and from my research, that some internet browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, have spell-check, grammar-check, and punctuation-check built into them. If not, here are some helpful links:
Due to a lot of discrimination a foreigner may experience in our community, mainly due to the fact that this is an English only forum, there are some decent online translators, such as Google Translator
Just to be clear, I bump the latest one every now and then until it becomes clear that nobody has anything new to contribute.
Well, without furthur ado, here is my thread that I bring to you today!

Empathy [Intelligent Discussion #5]
Topic: Do you think that empathy should be something in which everybody should follow, or do you think that it leads to misconceptions of prejudice? What do you think should be done to promote empathy?

So, with this new code of conduct coming out, I couldn’t wait to add my own little bit of thought into it. Obviously it’s exciting, but it also borderlines empathy, which is the topic for today. We also must be able to see some hidden messages which I will possibly get into in the future, it’s not important. What is important, though, is our topic for today.
I personally think, that empathy is something that we all should exhibit and follow. It’s an amazing thing when a community as a whole abides, shows, and exhibits this. If you didn’t get the above definition of empathy, my condensed definition is that empathy is the act of putting oneself into another’s shoes and making an educated analysis of it. This means asking yourself, “What would they say or how would they react if I did this?” This usually prevents most of the problem [for example, trolling, teasing, or name calling] before it even arises. It’s basically a fancy word for the “golden rule” [I’m sorry, but this isn’t a religious view, this rule is commonly known around the world regardless of race, age, or religion]
I, being a human being, understand the pains and heartache of caring about every other human that we meet. I know, other people can be irritating, annoying, and just downright mean, but it doesn’t mean we really can confront them about it and make fun of them because of a few flaws. Let’s face it, we’re all humans, none of us are perfect and we’ll all turn out eventually, for better or for worse. We all make mistakes, and I’m sure we’re all aware of them, in one way or another.
To promote empathy, I think that the staff team should take more care [not that they aren’t doing enough, they’re perfectly fine at the moment] to the fact that many players lack empathy. They troll [pardon my mythological relation] others just because they feel the need. They don’t feel empathy, and won’t without proper help. That’s why the new code of conduct was arisen, to help people like you and me, who care about the community and want to help out.
It’s not exactly a huge thread, but all I want from you is to look at one fact : You are a difference maker. You can achieve what you believe, and nobody can bring you down to their level without your will. You make choices, whether them being not the best, they can be, if you really hope so.
I’m not trying to put false thoughts or hopes into your head, but all I’m challenging you to do is try to think about how others feel when you do something. You trolling somebody, maybe making a joke about them could just be the tipping of the glass that makes his world fall like a colossal glass falling on an urban city. Who knows, maybe they’ve had a hard day, maybe found out that they’ll be failing a course and having to spend an extra year at school when they could have been going on to post-secondary education and be getting on with life. Maybe a death of a loved one could have occurred? Possibly even family troubles or abuse?
I’m going to leave you with a famous quote: “An eye for an eye makes the world blind.” Obviously by visionary Mahatma Gandhi, he had a way to look at things which didn’t involve physical fighting. Before you take the other person’s eye, or even think about taking another’s eye out, think about the consequences for them, not you. Be selfless. Although, I doubt any of you would be provoked enough to take out another’s eyes in today’s society.
Thanks for reading, it wasn’t exactly the largest thread, but I hope I got my point across,

I know this won't help much, but this is the internet. The fact that you are anonymous promotes the lack of empathy. Most people on these boards "troll" because the victims have no way of getting revenge, and the "trolls" know that. Doing something mean on the internet does not affect the "troll" in any way in real life. These 'Intelligent Discussions' are nothing more than a mere show of your literacy knowledge. Your point will not get across to people because if you think about it, in two years, if someone is getting trolled, the "troll" will not think of empathy because its the internet. Anonymity provides a foundation for "trolls" and such to be able to do mean things and not feel guilty for it.

Well, the one thing that this is, is a discussion, and I'm all up for a bit of critique. I'm obviously aware of the fact that many people troll behind the internet because to them, being probably cowards hiding behind their computer, anonymity is something that obviously have on us. But, there's something to talk about.
People that are on the internet truly and obviously don't care about their reputation, but many people also always, always care about how and what others think of them outside of the community.
What I'm trying to say, is that the troll isn't the person who has the upper hand, we have the upper hand on the trolls. We can all just ignore them, and they'll stop. Obviously, less people crying about trolls, means the low self esteem that the troll has already, won't be affected.
We can also ban the troll, blocking his path to self esteem. Obviously, if they can't get their message across, they can't do anything about it. -
Maybe focus on trying to teach individuals to not be so gullible and e-serious.
That's almost as hard as teaching a rock to talk. Everybody can be soft, and small comments can put them over the top. What they feel on the inside can be so much more different on the outside. They may feel all happy and joyful on the outside, but they could be crying and dieing on the inside.
Trolls see it a different way, it's a selfish way to get away from real life, putting others down to bring yourself up. We're all equal, no? Even the new code of conduct calls for equality. -
The reason why people are over sensitive to comments on the internet is due to the fact that people who are new to the internet, or do not spend much time on the internet, would visualise the "troll" speaking to them in real life. What is actually happening is, with the cover of being anonymous, they reveal their hindered side which can be due stress, depression, etc, etc. In real life, they may be normal people, cheerful people, or even the social-able ones. However, people have to realise that talking on the internet, is never the same as talking in real life.

Lol This is a big subject on which an endless debate can see day.
First of all and above all people think about themselves and their own interest.
To be able to Empathize you must have the notion of Sympathy, and have at least some sympathy for the person . In the case of an Enemy , it will be a different matter. You will probably not put yourself in his shoes to feel his pain but to have an idea of his reactions and what may he do as a riposte or a strike ." This is for real life"
Here we are on internet, NO ONE HAS AN IDENTITY , I CAN BE A ANYONE BUT ME .So how can this work ? The main problem of a forum is the TROLLS .Those people has no life , they are here for only one reason : TROLL People to death. To Give a sense to your topic of the day , we must first get rid of them ,then we may in a second position think about using Empathy. " The only way to get rid of them is a ( delete post button as option for the thread maker ) , As all their posts will be deleted and make them feel that no one has sympathy for them , they will just disappear for ever.
Even now that the forum is clean , the need of sympathy will come in the second place to enable you to put yourself in other`s skin . It will be more a give and take . As people prefer to take rather than giving , lol , I guess that there may be great things to expect about Empathy here on this forum specially . " CF is a ( kill your enemies game ) , This leads you to more antipathy "
Anyone get my point ?:o -
I think these Intelligent Discussion threads are actually a very good idea because they can get you thinking. Even if the people on the internet don't change, at least someone is trying to do something about it/get everyone to be aware of it.
"Trolls" are a big issue on the internet for me, I almost stopped coming to the forums because of it; basically anything you do/say can be flamed at. An example is I once saw a thread about some guy posting his high score and then a lot of people said that it wasn't good and that theirs was better.
Some people are simply really mean in real life, but that number is very few, compare that to the number that are mean on the internet, which is a whole lot more. Theoretically, that means there are people that are nice in real life, but mean online.
There are a lot of reasons on why you can't say certain things in real life, but that goes out the window when you're talking online. The problem with communicating on the internet is that you can't see who you are talking to (unless it's a video chat but that's besides the point). If you're just sending IMs or something, you can't change your tone of voice or express facial emotions (that's where emoticons come in). That is why sarcasm doesn't work online, because unless it's very obvious, you won't be able to tell if the guy is being sarcastic or not.
I have noticed that everyone is harsher on the internet, no one ever sugarcoats things. This isn't necessarily "trolling" but in real life, you would know the person you are talking to and know what they are like, so you would at least try to be nice. If you're talking to a stranger in real life, then hopefully, you would be nice to make a good first impression.
Why do "trolls" exist anyway? Do they enjoy being mean to people? My theory is that they are bullied/have people being mean to them in real life. Maybe it is because they are bullied that they feel hate and a need for revenge so that's how they vent their frustration, by being mean to people online. Insulting people/putting people down makes them feel inferior and you feel superior, and maybe that is what the "troll" needs, the feeling of superiority because they could be bullied in real life.
If you go to a party in real life and you know everyone there, you wouldn't "troll".
If you go into a chat room online and everyone there you know, you wouldn't "troll".
If you go to a party in real life and you know basically no one there, you wouldn't "troll".
If you go into a chat room online and you know basically no one there, some people would "troll". -

This exemplifies my point exactly. Trolls can't see their victim, the most that they can get out of "troll" comment is either vulgar language back to them, which usually is a "success" for the troll, or the other person takes action and does something, which usually is a "fail" for the troll.
If a troll is trolled back, their usual comeback is, "Kid you're trash." or "Get good." Those are terrible comebacks [basing ranking on skill level from a game]. Obviously, seeing somebody in real life is harder, because you know who you're hurting, and feel for them.
I know, empathy over the internet fails, but so does sarcasm, so why are we letting so many "troll" comments get to us? What's the point in crying over somebody who probably needs an internet board to have his/her esteem brought back to normal?
I also agree with the fact that trolls have personal life problems. Most people just don't come into a bar sober and start fights. They either drink for fun [which isn't usually a problem] or drink to forget something [maybe personal life problems]. Usually, the ones with problems are the ones getting booted out of the country back to his or her own country because of fights.
Empathy is something we have to learn, it's not something that's natural. -

I think that you have not read my post. To learn something you must first have a feeling and the will to learn it.
What you are trying to do is very valuable , but I don`t think that you can teach CF players what you want to teach.
This subject is not for this community. Talk about which mouse you use or what graphic card you have or how to get Free Zp , then you will see plenty of the kids posting in your threads , showing their interest .
Here it`s God ,skill and weapon stuffs that interest them.:o -

Intelligent Discussions, there is no such thing...
This is the internet, every intelligent discussion will be turned in to a no-brain-flame-thread.
That is how the internet works. You can't fight it or it will kill you, slowly till you give up and join along you can try but you will fall down that is how the internet works
You need to accept it or you will be next....
P.s really empathy there is no such thing on the internet and especially not on gaming forums... -
All those who think these discussions are pointless are really misunderstanding their meaning.
In any environment real life or online, it's always the individuals choice on how they act. And whether or not they will choose to; learn and grow, or to be arrogant and selfish. Yes the internet has differences that affect some peoples attitude. But our ability to influence is the same regardless. Saying it's impossible to change things here is the same as saying it about people in real life. Yes some are impossible to change, but there are some who will gain something from wisdom spoken to them.
We can speak something to a crowd and they will forget it tomorrow, but we must speak it anyway.
Personally, I think these discussions would be more accurately labeled as "common sense", but seeings how common sense is no longer common anymore... I guess I can't really complain. -

There are such things as Intelligent Discussions, you just need people who are willing to discuss whatever, which isn't most people because this is the internet. Yes, there are a lot of threads that do turn into a "no-brain-flame-thread", but so far, no trolls have posted on this thread probably because even trolls would think "I probably shouldn't post here." unless they specifically like to cause disruption as much as possible. It's kind of like Hitler walking into an Anti-Hitler meeting and promoting all his actions.
Maybe this is how the internet works, but then there are two groups of people, the people who do something about it, and the people who don't. Do you think that all this trolling is good? Do you think that people are happy about it? Most people don't, but they don't do anything because they don't think they can make a difference. You're right, I probably couldn't make a difference either, but at least I tried.
Empathy exists online, it's just rare if you do find someone who has it. -

Thanks, I agree completely.
Guys, I would agree with you on the basis that most internet sites that many trolls are present [such as anonymous boards and chat sites] because they have anonymity. Trolls on this forum usually get banned, and some of that spark dies out. Let's face it, there haven't been many trolls lately. Most of them that are currently attempting to troll wouldn't last a day in anonymous boards, they're just much too random and full of people who's "tighty-whities" have been tugged one too many times and need a bit of help with self esteem.
We can't obviously just get it. It's like things such as trust and respect. They come over time with the proper intuition and proper steps. You don't see forumers making threads about them being new, and getting 100% utter respect. This isn't necessarily trolling/teasing new forumers, it's just fact. You can't become an all star because you haven't proven anything. It's the same in anything. You don't ace a course by not writing the test, you don't become a movie star without auditioning and showcasing yourself, and you don't become a famous icon in the world by sitting at home and hoping.
People actually like protecting reputation. I'd say the only people that I would give a bit of approval and a "nod of the head" to are the top two teams who have gone to China. They have the right to say that they're some of the best we have at the moment. Unless you've proven that you're better, I wouldn't be going around saying, "Get good." And let's face it, I don't see JBiel or MRN coming on the forums and telling everyone to get good. The only time that I've seen them be a bit ****y are in scrims that they are joking around, and as we are too, we understand and joke around with them.
It's something that needs to be gotten across to others, so if you don't care enough to read them, these threads aren't for you. -

Guess who just turned it into a "no-brain-flame-thread"...
I feel like most of the people, at least members of the CF community are pretty good about trolling and realizing what they're saying. I've been on forums that are much worse, and now that I've been on our forum for a month or so I feel like this is a great group, I've made some online friends already who are really nice, I don't worry so much about the trolls bc they can just be ignored as other people have said...Good topic. -

Just ignore him if he peeves you. Everyone deserves a say in this thread. Just because he thinks empathy doesn't belong on the internet, it doesn't mean that you can't. You have a free mind, or should, anywhere in the world. That doesn't exclude the internet, because your mind is all yours and all of your thoughts belong in there. -
Well, the one thing that this is, is a discussion, and I'm all up for a bit of critique. I'm obviously aware of the fact that many people troll behind the internet because to them, being probably cowards hiding behind their computer, anonymity is something that obviously have on us. But, there's something to talk about.

I always try to act friendly and try to help anyone but people who want to fool me or make fun of me get their own style of manner back

I m sure most of us here have empathy but we tend to mask it with our online persona when it comes to gaming. We try to put up a macho front but in the end we are the opposite. I ve experimented with these types of behaviour during the weekends using my cousin and my nephew as ginue pigs. XD

Being anonymus on the internet gives you the freedom to do whatever you want and not worry about the consequences. This topic is ok to debate but don't expect trolls to have an epiphany and start being emphatic towards others. If they don't learn it from their parents or their own life experience they won't learn it from random people online.

Sorry, I meant for it to be coky [with the "c" in the middle of o and k] as in over-egotistic and completely full of each other.
But again, many people could care less if they were anonymous. On the other hand, players care of their reputation on forums. I sure wouldn't want to be hated anywhere, much less a forum in which nobody really sees my face, but I'd rather have a good reputation than a bad one. Many trolls are actually nice people in real life because they are the ones being bullied some of the time. Trust me, some guy at my school acts really tough over things such as MSN and Facebook, but is the nicest person to teachers and other people when he sees them. It's a matter of him trying to make himself feel better, or not.Being anonymus on the internet gives you the freedom to do whatever you want and not worry about the consequences. A forum isn't supposed to be a humour based site. If you really want some humour in your life, find friends and joke around on Facebook, or visit FailBlog / Icanhazcheezburger / LOLcats and have all the laughs you want. I personally think that a forum is a place to joke around at times, but still be able to take something seriously. I only joke around when times call for some humour. I don't go into a serious thread and destroy it by doing things like getting closed due to trolling and off-topic-ness.QFT If everyone was like "Ily..You're right" then every thread would be damn boring and straight deja vu
