New internet laws

From what I have been hearing from news sources a new internet law was passed into effect January 1st, 2011.

This law is about internet bullying and trolling.

Essentially it makes impersonating another person in a way to cause harm or malice towards them a misdemeanor IF they are in the same state as you, however if you do it towards a person in another state a felony.

So essentially as an example. making another facebook account to impersonate someone from your school in order to spread rumors about them becomes a misdemeanor. Felony if they are in another state.

Wasn't Tyler Clementi's suicide involved in this new law?
  • Nothing to do with me or my 'shiver me timbers' ways, so its just a meh from me.
  • God Bless America eh?
I wonder when this will be updated to take on the likes of WikiLeaks etc?

Not positive, it had to do with the amount of 2010 suicides caused by cyber bullying.
    That law is stupid.
    I agree.

I think what the wikileaks guy was doing was right, but he overdid it. Showing corruption = good. Telling everyone the locations of the nuclear silos? BAD Thats a terrorist strike waiting to happen.
  • USA also wants to make an Internet Black List similar to China, making it so we can't access certain sites like possibly YouTube.

I know this one is true for sure

so we may not be able to go to youtube :(
  • so we may not be able to go to youtube :(

no it might mean no pr0ns :p
  • so we may not be able to go to youtube :(

The whole thing that's been with YouTube is because of "copyright material". While I forgot which company it was that tried to sue YouTube because it had "copyright material" I believe YouTube had ultimately won because of the fact YouTube has the report system that they use to find Copy Righted material in videos and take them down.

So I believe if it did come down to that, it could be appealed, but ultimately I fail to see what they are trying to achieve by doing this.

The US make the most pointless, stupid over the top laws... Ever.

    November 12, Update:

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup Nov. 18 on S. 3804, Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act.

Remember to contact your representatives to let them know your opinion on the proposed bill. To find out who are the senators on your state and their contact information, you can visit the U.S. Senate website, by clicking here

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

    Stop the Internet Blacklist

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition
DemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

Update: Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator from the following link and tell him or her your concerns about this bill

Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!

Update, from EFF's website: the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess. Massive thanks to all who used the EFF Action Center to write to your Senators to oppose this bill."

Ummm.... You need to read more, particularly the area of history. England has had a choice few laws in here time too. And quite honestly, I would rather live here than over there with ya'll, no offense.

The USA does have some rather stupid laws, but they were made by some rather stupid politicians.

None taken, (I ain't trying to turn this into a USA vs UK thing by the way)

But we aint trying to destroy the internet for the rest of the world.

    All laws are about money.

Taking Youtube down is a prime example, they remove it from the internet > More people go and buy CD's and whatever, it's unfair, we aren't all made of money. But who cares? The government? I don't think so.

    Our laws are stupid too.

Like this... If you are living on your own you get more money than a family of four from the government. WTF?

I'm kind of just ranting now -.-

What the government does, vs. what they do is always contradicting. I do not see this as the land of the free anymore.
  • Taking down youtube won't affect or improve the situation on the war against piracy. In fact others will flock to other video sharing websites veoh.com or something like that.

It will be removed *completely* from the internet if the US says so.

About PtP they will most likely screw that too.

    To some it is.

If you have just arrived in the UK you get the 5 star treatment. You get a house a car and a nice wad of money (and all your bills paid for)

However, live here all your life, you get treated cr*p at work, you are constantly in debt, you have to live in a mortgaged house (unless you are a welfare scrounger then it's 5 star treatment for you too)

    - My mum and dads house had mould growing on the wall no central heating and it was practically a condemned building but they had to live here because the council looked down their stuck up nose and wouldn't help or even give a penny.

This place would be great if those idiots in Downing St. Effed off.

    D: ok I'll stop now :D

Many of the upper generation looks down on our latest generation, truth be told, I see why they judge us as they do, they way many of us act lately, but what I do know is that our generation does have the power to change these sort of things (such as ones you mentioned) if we can vote the right leaders for the right reasons and follow them.

    Believe me we try.

The last general election over here was rigged. They turned thousands away from polling stations. Just so that idiot Cameron could get in power he's such a div.
  • What about different countries?

    Such a fail.
  • Do I see a way out here? Do you?
    Its a hard ask!
I have searched my soul ( & the internet ) for some answers, and I still am:(
BTW when we argue among ourselves we deflect from the original goal!
The 21st century is supposed to be a new era. A time of change. the Dawning of the AGE of Aquarius!

    Man is overtaken by Woman?

That would be my type of understanding:)
We Men have done a bad job so far:(
  • That law is stupid.

But we don't have 2 care about it.
