Yup, I also read the manga and it was AWESOME.

I liked it like 5x more than the anime.I only read blue,red,green,yellow chapters.
A little into crystal and I stopped.

Nope. The first gen will never be beaten.
I didn't like gen 2 much and was pretty much over Pokemon by that time. But damn, it was huge.
