Its double sided. One for control and the other for speed.

the main dif between a reg mouse pad and a gaming one (like the razer sphex), the gaming mouse pad sticks to your desktop and doesn't move around. they also pick up movement better.
i used a normal cheep mouse pad until recently and it worked fine tho. i just like that this one does not move around. -
