External graphics cards and sound cards
So I'm looking to boost up my laptop since it's still pretty laggy even with low settings on CF
I went to Best Buy and they said that they don't carry external graphics cards in the stores and I didn't want to buy a sound card without prior knowledge.
So I'm averaging about 20-40 FPS in a full 16 man room but I want smoother gameplay. I'm not looking to spend over maybe $130ish on one at the most. I've looked online at bestbuy.com since the guy helping me said I can order 'em online but I'm kinda lost.
Can someone post links to decent external graphics cards? I'm pretty new to this whole computer upgrade thing so it'd be nice to get some help
And about sound cards, my sound just goes haywire a lot of the times just when I'm watching movies or playing CF so I wanna upgrade mine to something with better quality. I already tried updating the sound thingy where it has it under Gamebooster 2 but it still glitches. Now I'm not sure if you can open up a laptop and switch out the sound card. From what the person at Best Buy said, I think that's the general concept but if you can't do that for a graphics card, what makes a sound card different? Anyway, yeah, same as graphics card, if you guys could just give me some recommendations, that'd be swell. About $130 is the price range for the sound card too.
Also, for the links, please get them at Best Buy. The nearest Fry's is a good distance away and there's no other electronics shop in my vicinity.
Thanks

Wish I can help you there.
The only thing you can upgrade your laptop is the memory and virus updates itself. In my opinion, try saving up for another laptop.
Because I have never heard of a external graphics card before. o.o"
I'm using a desktop, so I shouldn't know. -
You can have an external graphics card for a laptop
http://www.villageinstruments.com/tiki-index.php?page=ViDock
you basically take a desktop graphics card, put it in the dock and plug it in
Here's a video

vidock 1 and 2 are discontinued so you'd have to go with 3 or 4 -
We are all missing a point here....
He has a laptop....
upgrading a laptop?
That is like upgrading a mac impossible.. you just need to buy a new one...
But srsly... Your betting of buying a desktop or a new laptop if you save up another 600 dollar you can buy a good working laptop for gaming
Or just upgrade your laptop with another 2 GB ram and crossfire runs mostly more thanks to the ram so if you got a videocard with 128mb ram and than like 3 gb ram you should get around the 80 fps even more if you MANUAL config your pc for gaming
Here is a quote from PCWORLD;Upgrading Your Laptop's Graphics Card
Upgrading your laptop's graphics card is no walk in the park; in fact it's something more akin to open heart surgery. But it can be done, and the rewards can be well worth the trouble and risk.
Do you wanna know the troubles and risk's? you better not..... >_> -
Desktops are much better than laptops and cheaper. Unless you want to buy a 3000$ Alienware m17 go ahead.
Desktops aren't much better now days. I custom built a desktop and got less fps than my current laptop, 70-100fps on desktop, 80-120fps on laptop with my card at 300mhz (power saving), 120-180fps at 750mhz. -

so just upgrading ram will increase CF performance?
sorry to sound like such a noob but how exactly do you do that?
and what about the sound card? is that still a bad option too? -
I disagree. Worked for my printing company. Used all MAC's there. They are just as upgradable as a PC. Also steam is multi platforming games to run on MAC's OS as well. MAC's blow PC's out the water with Audio/Video/Music/Gfx Design.SamuraiMoMo wrote: »That is like upgrading a mac impossible.. you just need to buy a new one...

I think increasing the RAM would help a little in CF performance because the work done is distributed more, meaning more information can be processed. The sound card is good to have, but its hard to tell the difference between a good sound card and a stock sound card. -
I personally have not seen any sound cards for laptops, but in my searches online, they seem to be just USB devices that makes the sound better somehow. I'm not sure if this is correct, but this is what I found online: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829118013&cm_re=laptop_soundcard-_-29-118-013-_-Product
