Do you ever tought...
...That soldiers were a lot more manlier in the early days?
firstly they rushed against eachother with sticks and rocks,
then they rushed at eachother with blades and sticks with blades,
then they rushed with spears, swords, and standed under bow/crossbow ranges only enjoying the shadow that the arrows created,
then they started getting puny,
they invented the firearms, but sometimes still rushed with bayonettes stabbing pretty much every chunk of meat they found in their way,
then they made preciser firearms and automatic firearms, wich made'em start camping and crouching behind sandbags and hiding inside trenches,
then they made these weapons preciser, and so on the caliber wich they used started to get smaller and smaller...
What's reserved to the 3rd world war?
recoilless laserbeans?
damm you puny soldiers... (hope they do not become like the stormtroopers...)

betcha accepting gays in military is gonna pop-up soon
anyways, i agree, especially in the rev. war, you just stand in a line, precisely knowing your enemy is aiming at your head not being able to do anything till the captain says fire. i'm just glad i don't live back in those days -
............
The reason why they couldn't fight like now-a-days is because of technology.
Sure, getting hit by a sword or something hurts, but imagine yourself, in modern warfare, where you can die at any RANDOM moment.
That, my friend, is scary. This is why I have respect for all soldiers of any type.
Now to MwakMunzta,
That was European warfare. They were dumb. Which was a crucial factor to the reason why the Americans won using guerrilla warfare. (Other factors were included too). -

you could've be headshoted by a bow in that era
anyways, what's manlier than running naked screaming profanities while holding a rock willing to smash your enemy's skull? xD -

What's manly or what's smarter?
why do you think we started using long range weapons?
Humankind turned to their long range weapons so that they could cut down the loss of life on their side...
though now that is back firing since the enemy has pretty much the same type of weapons.
the farther away we can get and still win a war without causing too many human casualties the better. -
Mainler? Most soldiers who fought from close distance against their opponents had big psychological problems after the war. That's one of the reason they've started building long distance weapons. Not all people are killing machines. I personally can't imagine what our ancestors saw on the battle fields. And what some people still see.
