Things that need to be said and heard - Part 5

I just want to share some personal thoughts, opinions, and advice if you will, on certain community subjects that people need to hear, even though it's painfully obvious or common sense, and especially if its not. Please, I respectfully ask if you are not into this subject or do not feel like committing the time to read it, do not comment on it. There's no need for rude or sarcastic comments.

Building Relationship & Reputation
  • When we go to a friend’s party or a business meeting, isn't it much easier to communicate with people compared to when we’re online? In this community, all we have is the written word. Since we are online, we lose vocal expression and body language. We can’t shake hands or wave at each other. It’s harder to make the mental connection (as silly as that sounds) that behind each of our users is a real person.
  • We all rely on our reputation within the community as a gauge of our "worth". Usually, we as users track the activity of other members in online forums in four ways: username, avatar, signature and writing style/appearance. Users need an opportunity to create and develop their online reputation. That is one of the growing points of a community. New members are most often ignored or welcomed by only a small proportion of the community while the most "popular" or "influential" members are those who have been around a while or made a lot of applicable posts.

With these two points before you, do you feel that the anonymity of each user is one of the main causes of the problems within our community? The fact that people seem to forget that there are real people on the other side of those usernames is obvious. Do you think that is the reason users in our community often talk to one another with such disrespect? What about between teams in-game? The demeaning and derogatory comments? The unsportsmanlike conduct? Do you think it would be different if everyone had to use their real name in the community or would it not make a difference? Is there anything that you feel would help this issue among users or will it always be this way?

Discuss.

  • That's the point i've been trying to make since the forumers started complaining about immature behavior ingame and off.
  • "Sarcasm fails on the internet."

That small of a quote can sum up the many problems. You aren't seeing the other's "face" which in reality shows more than 1000 expressions. For instance, one could be seem mad, like:
    Kid! You're Trash!

But he could have a sarcastic tint to it because he's joking around with his friend or colleague. Another could take this the wrong way, and a flame war could stop.

Therefore, I do agree that not being face to face is one of the many reasons why causes misconceptions and misunderstandings in this community.
  • A problem with the community are the people who think they are hardcore and also the super immature ones.

Myself, I am immature at times, but I don't find an excuse for it. I am mature when I need to be or expected to be.

Disrespect will always be thrown out, the problem is, I see the forums dying a little because of the amount of threads that are not as "productive" for say. When I say a little, I mean a lot. I feel that we should attract even more forumers and give an incentive for being a forumer. I mean, I know there is more and more, but at the same time, there is less posts. I can't explain it correctly.

Using their real name is the community is more professional, but it also can leave insecurity to some players. I enjoy the creative names and leaving the choice for people to have their first name as their community identity.

To resolve this issue, is nearly impossible. Hell, maybe even impossible. I do STRONGLY believe that trolls brings the community together. When you have a troll, the mature part of the community finds it rather annoying, and they bond together and kick them to the curb. I do not find that here.

What I did find interesting is how people "change" their attitude when they play Cross Fire compared to Counter Strike Source/1.6/Condition Zero. It seems like people from Cross Fire act more "mature" when taking a part in the CS community than the CF.

If CF gets respect as a good game, then the community will gradually mature.

I know I may be wrong, but this is my two cents.
  • You dont get nowt by a forum reputation LOL
Get on road.... Now thats reputation :)

Why aren't there any more people like you?

Awesome thread. Favorite mod. Besides Rex ;D
  • It's almost impossible to solve that issue. We are from various parts of the world and we shouldn't share our personal info to anyone (privacy issues). And because of those "privacy issues" we are not demanded to write up our info, who we are, where we live, etc.
  • As usual a good read Kris.

People should show respect to everyone, and in return they will get respected.
  • Agreed, people are more immature online because they can insult without getting consequences.

What i mean is..& i use this as an example.

Ugly guy says something insulting to a person online.
(not much happens really..just the normal insults of no lifer, youre mother & etc.)

Ugly guy insults person face to face.
(now alot of things can happen.)
    1. Guy can get punched on the face. (Headsh0t!)
    2. Guy can get insulted back much harsher because hes ugly. (QQ noob)

So basically what im saying is that the rules & consequences apply less online.

The one's that disrespect/trash talk online are the one's that are the most insecure about themselves in real life.

Not necessarily. Some of them just do that cause the revel in their own self proclaimed power.

I can not say with statistical accuracy, but I would take a reasonablie guess that the CS/CSS community's average age overall is considerably higher than CrossFire as a whole. You have to take into account it is how the majority of the community presents itself to the outside world (New users coming in). This community does not present itself like the CS communities do. There is a degree of maturity that needs to be present ALL THE TIME.

It's the chain effect as I have stated before. What would happen if 99/100 people acted in a mature, professional way and the one oddball came in trying to screw things up? That one person would most likely be ousted because the way he/she conducted themselves is not the standard.

Anonymity I believe in THIS community is definitely a problem. Anonymity in an online community is not always a bad thing, but the users have to take it upon themselves to forge the community the way they want it. It is not just up to us as Staff and Administrators. You want a more mature community? Then take it upon yourselves to act in such a manner that would reflect that mature feeling as a whole.

I won't disagree. But often it's the one's that feel they can be 'mean' to others online since people are mean to them irl.
  • Easy solution to people disrespecting you : don't click the reply / quote button, just ignore them. I can't stand when people complain about how bad a community is when really all they are doing is feeding the trolls / flamers.

    + 1.

I can understand if people do it for that reason. Happens in real life too. But some people just do it because they're dooch bags.

People should try and put happy faces and stuff in everything they type.

There are many reason's that it happens. I don't think any of them are right. No one deserves to be disrespected. I know I have shown disrespect, and I also know who it feels to be disrespected. Kris keeps me on the straight and narrow most of the time :D

Anyone who is constantly negative and immature within an online community are either people who really don't care or people that don't know any different. Some people are treated like that in real life and thus see no problem doing it in other aspects of their life. Others, sincerely do not care what others think of them or how their words affect others. The KEY in all of this is to have the people within our community that are willing to step up and say "This is wrong." We need more of them, for sure.

What do you mean by Kris? xD Is that Polleus real name?I sometimes think if someone shows disrespect to me and, he/she doesn't deserve my respect and I should treat them the same. But that will only make matters worse right? Sometimes it's hard to keep your cool with people who are so negative. But hey, its worth a shot. At least you tried to be nice so I guess its worth it.

    Yes Polleus is Kris.

Yes, most know my real name from my brief stint with CSN. On topic, I think showing maturity and respect in the face of being treated wrongly shows the kind of person you are. Having the resolve to hold your temper and show them respect even when you are shown none - That is maturity. If everyone could learn that, we'd have an infinitely better community :D
  • I am a 38 year old father of five ages 17-22 and i find the lack of respect for people in general from the GENERATION Y... It seems alot of parents have failed in their jobs to teach their kids some common respect and manners... That being said i do find alot more hurtfull, raged, and disrespectful communication in game and forums here than most. I think having to use your real name may help to curb some of the bad communication, however i think there are just some people who just dont know any better. Just my 2 cents
  • Depends on the person and their mindset.

Some people join the community excepting to be accepted and contribute their ideas as well being positive and a good guy.

Others join to make silly threads, annoy or just troll.

I see. Awesome name and BEAST avatar. He made it for you.

OT: You're abso-freaking-lutely correct. But it's sad that not even 5% of the community, I took that number out of the air, isn't that way. Maybe it might be because of what Us3rK stated. We're from all over the place. We say/type things that are funny to us, but in other places all over the world, its taken as an insult. Who can blame them? We're all different in so many ways and we cant really change that.

Haha I love that guy. He's my idol.

OT: While I agree that we are all from different places, there is a common base line of respect that should exist and be promoted from within the community. Common sense says that if I insult you by calling you an offensive name, I am probably going to get a reaction out of you that will be less than desirable to the overall theme of professionalism. I am not saying everyone here has that common sense, but a lot of us do. If we all applied that common sense a little more and set the standard towards this community being more mature then not, newcomers would not be so quick to act in such an immature manner.
  • I don't want to go off-topic every time I post, but I've watched every single video at least half a dozen times. :)

    OT...lol

Yeah I agree. It's going to be a little bit difficult to make everyone think that way. When I mean a little I also mean A LOT. Lets face it. The community isn't really that great. But I think that's our fault. We often treat new comers like trash and flame them every time they come here.
  • Damn...Awesome thread like always kris. Although this is the first 1 I've actually replied to. I just can't conjure up a word of how much sense that made...Great work! :)

Not me. I treat them just like they were the old hags of the community. :)

    You're an exception then :D!!!
But most of us, including myself, are sometimes dooches with newbies.
